Skyfall Premiere Clothing

So, what did you all think of the clothing worn to the premiere? Daniel Craig of course wore Tom Ford, but Javier Bardem was the best-dressed there of all the male cast members in his Gucci dinner suit. I usually prefer Tom Ford over current Gucci clothes, but this time Gucci makes the more flattering suit.

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
SPOILER: She's looked worse!
I disagree, Bardem's trousers are far too long and unflattering. And evening wear should be blue not black.
True, Bardem's trousers were much too long. But the jacket fit well compared to Daniel Craig's, which was so tight that the whole thing was pulling everywhere. Whilst midnight blue (a blue-black) is preferable for evening wear, black is completely acceptable and has been worn many times by Bond, notably in Casino Royale and GoldenEye.
Skyfall is the only one with navy blue. A View to a Kill might also count as navy. But Bond has worn midnight blue dinner suits more often than black.
It was a midnight blue jacket with black lapels and black trousers. What was the pattern / texture of the material on the jacket?
It was also WAY too tight.
I also thought Bardem in his peaked lapel looked much much better.

It was midnight blue, which is a shade darker than navy. The dinner suit in TND still looks black.
BTW, Craig's suit up close has some kind of pattern to it...almost looked like spiderman in person....
Brilliant mate! Hope you had a great night.
I thought exactly the same - it looks like Spiderman's outfit.

Having read the linked article by Bond James Bond (post 1) There are clearly others who made some fashion howlers. I am particularly disappointed with Bear Grills, he looks like he borrowed half a clown costume!
Re Mr Craig's jacket, (and for that matter Ben Whishaw's velvet job which looked great on him,) there seems to be a trend for dinner jackets that have an almost blazer like quality to them in celebrity circles. As a one off it makes sense, its drawing attention to the actor, and the film premiere is the logical apex for this style. I must say though I do feel that Mr Craig's jacket is a bit on the tight side, which can be a dodgy proposition when wearing a shiny patterned fabric like that. In many ways it reminded me of Goldfinger's dinner jacket, which might or might not have been intentional for the anniversary!
Re midnight or navy dinner suits, as an alternative, it started in the 1930's according to The Black Tie guide: http://www.blacktieguide.com/Classic/Classic_Tuxedos.htm That dovetails with the fact conservative trends started to relax slightly at that point. Bonds relationship with this as far I knew started with Pierce Brosnan in TND, but I am not claiming to be right on that. Midnight blue is virtually impossible to tell compared to black, esp under artificial light. The Skyfall dinner suit is clearly Navy, so yes, it (Like Mr Craig's premiere jacket) is very much a short term here-and-now fashion statement, not a classic tailoring option.
Two tailoring / appearance points:
1) Javier Bardem's trouser length. There is nothing wrong with a slightly greater length in the leg as long as is does not ruin the overall line of the suit. I think the shape of his shoes (High bridge oxfords, implying he has a high foot arch) may have something to do with it. it ;looks like the trousers are sitting on them at a higher placement than you'd expect. I know how that feels! - Its best to wear the dress shirt and shoes you intend to use with the suit at the fittings if you can, to help eliminate this sort of thing. However, I also think it's better a little too long than too short!
Of course another possibility is the trousers had slipped a bit to hip level. - Something a cummerbund can hide to a degree.
2) Glasses or no Glasses? This is in reference to what you said David. There is no shame in wearing specticals! I have been to a couple of black tie dos where I have had to don the lenses to see guest speakers or video screens at the other side of the room. It can add an intellectual touch, and as long as the glasses are conservative (black or dark frames, the lenses are a sensible size) it can add to your appearance, not detract from it. Also I find its actually easier to wear glasses than muck about with contacts.
Midnight blue started with Bond in Dr. No. Skyfall isn't the first time Bond's dinner suit is a bit too blue. On the Thunderball Blu-ray, the blue is quite noticeable, especially the contrast between the blue cloth and blue satin lapels with the black satin bow tie. It's also clearly blue compared to the men around him wearing black. Roger Moore wore a very similar colour (though still not as bright) in A View to a Kill. Since A View to a Kill takes place in June, the days are very long and the blue is very clear in the 6 pm daylight. On the other hand, it looks a lot better than black would in daylight. So actually, the lighter blue in Skyfall is something we have seen on Bond before.
The cloth of the premiere dinner jacket has no history, neither with Bond nor in general. The fit of the jacket is a mess, compared to the one in the film, which is only a little bit too small.
I do indeed, I know how it feels! Its also amusing to see the glasses you have are exactly the style of glasses I was talking about!
