Disney has officially stated that it will be an original story, leaving all the books and existing plots added to the universe aside.

Also circulating the net is Mark Hamill's comments made right before Return of the Jedi released. He discusses the third trilogy and notes that the droids are the only characters who can move on to the other trilogies, which he groups as part of three trilogies, nine stories.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKD1xx0u-vs&feature=player_embedded

Apparently they were talking seriously about it back when the first trilogy was made, but there also seems to be acceptance that the original trilogy has its own conclusion that can sustain it.

It has also come up that there are existing treatments for episodes 7 through 12. Lucas himself has expressed that 7-9 are the most potentially exciting of all the stories to him. Disney will supposedly not be using these stories, which included a recast Luke at the time they were written.

The only way STAR WARS: Episode 7 is going to work is if they do bring back Mark Hamill as "Luke Skywalker", Harrison Ford as "Hans Solo" and Carrie Fisher as "Princess Leia Organa Solo". This is what the original fans have been waiting 29 years for.
With the amount of money these three actors could get now, I doubt they would turn it down. Much more than they did in 1977, 1980, 1983.
I don't give a darn how old they are and what they look like. They can use stunt men and stunt women.
I just can't handle someone else in these roles. Bring Billy Dee Williams back too.

My preferred title for Episode 7 would be: Song of the Sith; and it would tell the untold story of Darth Remus and how he was seduced by the Dark Side and slaughtered all the friendly animals in the forest of Endor, leaving only the Ewoks because their annoying nature amused his dark sensibilities.

Seriously though, Episode 7 can work just fine without Hamill, Fisher or Ford. They are all far to old to be taken seriously as action heroes and other than Ford none of them has aged gracefully (Hamill looked terrible at a recent Comic Con appearance and Fisher has had many well-publicized health and substance abuse issues which have really affected her, to say nothing of the fact that she pretty much retired from acting years ago).

While I wouldn't mind seeing Hamill briefly as an old, wizened Jedi master imparting wisdom to a new generation of force users (assuming he can get into a semblance of semi-convincing shape), the only characters that should be brought over and given any kind of meaningful parts are C3PO and R2D2 as they have been deeply entrenched in the saga thru all six episodes and Lucas has said for years that they would always be the glue that bound each episode together.

Beyond that, give us new characters (I wouldn't be averse to Han and Leia's children driving the story) in a new adventure that calls back to what has come before but is not hamstrung by it and get Steven Speilberg to direct it. I don't want to see a story featuring a clone of the emperor grown in a bacta tank who digs up another hidden death star and is ultimately defeated by an unconvincing texture map of Mark Hamill's face on someone else's body during a lightsaber duel while an overweight Leia and a rickety Han Solo engage in improbable and unconvincing heroics. You need a steadying force behind the camera new blood in front of it to make something like this work.

There's an article here about Ford not being entirely opposed to the idea of playing Han Solo once more. It struck me because I remember him in 1983 adamantly stating that he would never play Solo again (I never knew why until I read this article).

I kinda get the impression that Ford is really trying to keep his glory days alive and if that means revisiting Solo, the so be it, I guess.

The newest rumors actually also include that Disney is hoping to get all three of the leads from the original trilogy to make at least cameos, but more likely larger roles, if the actors are willing. Mark Hamill has supposedly already signed on for Episode VII.

Allegedly, all three leads are enthusiastic about being involved.

The news of it being an original story may be somewhat off, as well, with Disney supposedly working with the original outlines they bought from Lucas for the new trilogy. The highly successful Zahn novels are also supposedly in the mix right now as the storylines develop.

Looking at the last Tron movie, they can make Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford look younger, whether there is enough budget to make Carrie Fisher look half decent these days is another matter. Have a feeling the Emperor will return. Be good to see Lando as well. Casting for the 'new generation' is all important though. Threepio and Artoo are a given. I'd like to see the threat of a new Empire, proper Stormtroopers and Chewie needs to be there!

Have you chaps SEEN Carrie Fisher recently? I'm not sure I want to see her in the bun haircut OR a Jabba The Hut fun room sexy outfit. Nyet, comrades.

And NO, if we're going to use digital CGI-o-rama to make actors look different, I'm leaving. The multiple iteration digital retreads of the original three suck bilge water, and I'm angry that I can't get at least a re-mastering of the old Laserdisc release versions on BD (last release was on DVD, non 16:9 anamorphic). Fsck you, Lucas.

I don't think its worth digitally de-aging the actors, either. I got the pleasure of meeting Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill in September, and it would take body doubles and facial doubles alongside CGI to get it. They'd basically just be motion-capture voiceovers for an exorbitant amount of budget. If they are using the older actors, they best be older in the story.

I don't care how old the original actors may look. Just look through that and enjoy the energy and spirit of their acting. See the sparkle in their eye.
Larry Hagman on the new DALLAS tv series on TNT, was still acting as good as he ever did. Even through his real-life illness. He could still play "J.R. Ewing" with so much fervor.
If Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford should appear in Star Wars: Episode 7 in starring roles or co-starring roles and not just a cameo appearance, I'm sure you will see the same glory and guts kind if acting as we expect.
We have waited 30 years for this movie. I am sure they will not let us down.

Carrie Fisher has confirmed to Palm Beach Illustrated that she will return as Princess Leia in Episode VII. It is important to note that Fisher said last November that she would be returning only to subsequently claim that her comments were made "tongue-in-cheek." The most likely scenario is that LucasFilm/Disney is currently in the arduous stages of working out contracts for Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford to return.

Well, it is looking more and more likely that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will appear in Episode VII. Speaking to Bloomsberg Businessweek, George Lucas revealed that the trio were in final stages of negotiations when his LucasFilm company was sold to Disney. "We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison - or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiations. So I called them to say. 'Look, this is what's going on.' Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think [Disney] want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them."

I'm half and half with that. On one hand it's great news that episodes 7, 8 and 9 are happening. But these spinoff films I am very unsure about. I suppose I can't knock them before it's even happened though...

Hmm to me Star Wars simply is Vader, one of the reason the prequels did not work - he simply wasn't in it! After three films spanning what 8 hours? Things only got exciting in the last five minutes!!!! These new ones he obviously is not in it since he is dead so hard to get excited at the moment!!!!!!

Star Wars was my life when I was a kid in the early 80's - I think these sequels are simply too late now, even Harrison looks awful let alone the rest of them, prob should have done the prequels and sequels the other way around.

I will give these films a chance but I really hope CGI is heavily reduced, the prequels looked terrible.
