On Sunday, director Gareth Edwards took to the stage at the Anaheim Convention Centre (California) to reveal a few details about Rogue One, the first of the standalone Star Wars films scheduled for release in December 2016. Set between the third and fourth movies in the Star Wars saga, the film will follow a band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. Aside from the storyline, Edwards also revealed art and a brief preview for an audience of excited fans. Article includes pics from preview.
I had very grave doubts about this movie when Abrams was announced as director because of how badly bastardized Star Trek and basically told Trekkers to take a hike. But the most clips I see and the more practical effects they show us, the more excited I'm getting!

Dude, he wasn't a Trek fan, but he's a big SW geek! This will be golden, trust me.

So, it's currently being rumoured that Joss Whedon (director and writer of Marvel's Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron) will be helming the second Star Wars Anthology film after Gareth Edward's Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One installment.

Boba Fett has already begun pre-production and the Director has been hired, maybe that is the one he's doing.
Fans at San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H were treated to a special look behind the scenes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens by director J.J. Abrams, producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and writer Lawrence Kasdan.
Really looking forward to this however with it now under the ultra powerful and resourceful Disney and with all the spins offs planned I hope it doesn't go the way of the Marvel films (which I'm now sick to death of in any form)
Can't wait for the Han Solo origins film in, what, 2017?
I am so excited for episode 7/8/9 but this I am not looking forward to. To me Harrison Ford IS Han Solo and I will probably find it hard to except someone as his younger self. Hopefully I am proven wrong though and it is great.

My young nephew was around for the day yesterday and we had a typical couch Sunday (typical in my house anyhow). It was snowing outside etc so we banged on the Star Wars blu ray box set that I had a few Xmas's ago. Arguing where to start I reluctantly lost and had to start with the wrong trilogy, thus it kicked off with the Phantom Menace and inevitably during the course of the day all three of the "prequels" were watched whilst I read and frequently looked up at the TV!!!!
Anyhow its been a long time since I watched them - is it me or have they already aged badly?? I think the CGI is now under par and Anakin / dialogue and acting feels worse then ever (comical when finally Vader).
After it was all over I showed him the new trailer for the Force Awakens and the newish making snippet documentary and it was a relief on the eyes to see sets, models, characters in costume and importantly spaceships and characters that are familiar - instant nostalgia!!!!!
I know JJ has a lot of doubters for this project but it def looks like he has learnt from Lucas not what to do. Hope the story holds up!!!
Really starting to look forward to this one now as Star Wars needs some serious redemption!!
Just still a little concerned about the quality and frequency of the spin offs and sequels (I'm sick of all things Marvel - overload!!!) I know sometimes here we complain about the frequency of Bond releases however there is def a point where too much, too soon is a bad thing!!

Couldn't agree more with you almost to the letter. Much of the cgi looks terrible today (acting WAS terrible back in the day). I for one am not much worried with JJ at the helm for the first one: after all, the 2009 Star Trek was almost a 10 to me (Into Darkness is way more open to debate...). And as for overexposure, I can understand Disney's need for a quick RoI, but it's true that they could overdo it. Hopefully quality will be kept!

I just saw the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time a couple weeks ago. Granted, it's nowhere near as good as peoples' nostalgia suggests but I found it entertaining nonetheless. The new one looks very good, so I'll likely go see it.
And I doubt there will be any returning characters or actors besides possibly R2 or C-3PO. New characters and a new story is exactly what Star Wars needs.

Erm. The original cast are returning; Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels etc.
Surely you've seen the trailer? Heck even when they anounced it last year, they showed you who was going to star in it.

I think this article - especially the last two paragraphs- nails why we react so emotionally to that trailer:
