Was just interested in opinions on RM's performance in TMWTGG....

Having watched it the other day, i think his portrayel of Bond in this film was his hardest and coldest.
Which is ironic as the film is very slapstick in places. Be interseted to hear what the Moore haters think.

ps, sorry if this has been covered before.. am new to this

I like Roger Moore in all of his movies. He is definitely has a completly different take on his Bond then any of the other actors. But his sarcastic facial expressions and sofisticated gentlemen behaviour really works well for me!

His performance in TMWTGG was indeed different compared to the 'standard Roger Moore' performance. I think it is often said that Roger truelly became comfortable in the role during TSWLM.

I have to say that the part where he tries to be rough on questioning Maud Adams on the bed, doesn't really work for him. It's still more written for Connery's Bond. I think both Roger and the filmmakers knew that it didn't really fit with him... I always enjoy the part where Roger Moore puts Mary Goodnight in the closet and has his way with Scaramanga's girlfriend, to later remark: "Don't worry darling, your time will come ;)" :)) - Classic!! Gotta love Roger Moore!

All in all, his performance in TMWTGG was different, but I thought he did a great job once again. However IMO it took him more movies to truelly be the convincing in the role, and be that well known Bond he is today. Had he only done LALD and TMWTGG he would have proberbly been ranked at the very bottom of most people's lists...

I like Moore in T MWTGG. He's not naturally tough like Connery despite the stuff with Maud Adams but he brings a sly cyncism to the part. I think it's his best performance & he looks at his best physically too.

Amazing that Moore says he's ashamed at his pushing the kid into the river in that film, but praises Skyfall despite Craig Bond's unchivarlous behaviour. But maybe Sir Rog is on a retainer from EON.

I think Moore has always said that 'his Bond' was very different from Connery's Bond. I believe it was something along the lines of: When Sean was with a lady you could do 2 things, he could make love to her or stab her in the back. With me (Moore) you could only have Bond make love with her because stabbing her would look nasty.

I think the same goes with Craig and Moore realizes that.

Agree completely with this, and it is the best example of why I think TMWTGG was Moore's worst performance as Bond. After starting strongly with LALD, he took a step backward here, as if he was trying (or was told) to emulate Connery, which just isn't him. He got it right the third time with TSWLM.
    Hilly...you old devil!

I think his performance was a bit erratic (bearing in mind the script and supporting cast were relatively weak for any Bond film, save Christopher Lee's superb performance as Francisco Scaramanga), although nowhere near as erratic as it was in For Your Eyes Only. He does indeed start out very strong with LALD, gives a bit too much of a mixture of comedy and trying to be Connery here, and then settles down as the Moore that we're most familiar with in TSWLM (a film which worked great for him). I wasn't bothered THAT much by the scene with Andrea Anders, though it did seem odd and changing in tone. However, I did think that his continual annoyance with Goodnight was one of his stronger points (as was, believe it or not in my opinion, his annoyance with and even mocking of Sheriff Pepper, at least until he approaches Scaramanga's hangar and lets Pepper tag along, thereby ruining it...). Although he takes it in stride, you can tell the character still doesn't suffer fools well...something later Moore Bonds seemed to omit.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

I think TMWTGG is one of Moore's better performances. He brings a dark tone to the role which is absent from most of his other outings, giving his portrayal more depth (no pun intended).

He says in one of the DVD documentaries that he read Fleming's Bond as someone who had kill, but didn't like it. You can see that in this film: when Bond attacks Andrea, he is acting hard, but he is doing it because he needs information from her; because its his job.
