I hadn't seen either until the Bond 50 collection, so I never really had an opinion on Dalton before, and if anything, I was willing to dispose of him in conversation in favor of praising the Bonds I had seen (Connery, Moore, Brosnan, and Craig, at the time).
At this point, I am impressed with Dalton and think both of his are really great movies. They each are almost perfect 80s action films to me by toning down the cheese and turning up the class and imagery.
I'd pick The Living Daylights, of the two, but if you are in an 80s, Miami Vice, Bond combo mood, License to Kill is excellent.
TLD and LTK are not far off being the two most different films in the series. TLD is witty and relatively low key from Bond's perspective, whereas LTK is a brutal revenge thriller, involving a bad guy making another bad guy's head pop.
I consider both to be in the top 5 but it's hard to choose a winner.

I have to say TLD because LTK is probably my least favorite movie in the series. I have probably seen it through only a few times. I remember seeing TLD in the theater and thinking Dalton did a very good job of playing Bond. I loved Roger Moore as Bond and he's still my favorite but I loved what Dalton brought to the role. Even though I don't care for LTK I think Dalton is very good in it. It's just too bad that Dalton didn't get to make a couple more films.

Really wish Dalton had done more.
