6 Years Between LTK And GE

Does it annoy anyone else that there was such a huge gap between LTK and GE? I have been re-watching all the bond films in order, and it is very interesting to see the gradual change in time amongst the films. However, between LTK and GE the change is less gradual, and more sudden, which is a shame because I would have liked to see how an early 90's bond would have turned out. (I hope I'm making sense here, I'm not sure how else to word this)...

Do you think there will ever be a gap bigger than the 6 years one between LTK and GE in the bond franchise?

I sincerely hope not 4 years was horrible enough another 6 year gap would be unthinkable. As a huge Dalton fan when I was young I was very disappointed when he left. Though I loved GE I think any Bond film I would have loved after that long a layoff. I agree the change in tone from TD to PB was jarring I dont know if I find it any more so than the switch of RM to TD in style

I think GE tended to be overrated just because of how new it felt, which was more a result of the long layoff, i.e. no smooth transition from LTK, rather than actual quality of the movie.

Anything more than the four years we had to wait for SF is just too long of a break.

At the time, the gap was maddening - to me probably even more so since I really enjoyed the direction the Dalton films were taking. In retrospect, though, six years doesn't seem like a great length of time (it might have something to do with my age). Anyway, I think the huge contrast between films isn't so much the period of time, but more of a conscientious effort to re-vitalize the franchise after the hiatus. It needed to be different - after six years, you couldn't just pick up with business as usual. In 1995 there were a bunch of twelve-year old boys who essentially 'grew up' with no Bond. It was time to re-introduce the character to a new audience.

There's also a vast difference between DAD and CR, again not because of the time difference, but because of a purposeful artistic direction.

I was ten at the time of GE's release, so just six years was forever from my viewpoint (however I was already a Bond fan by watching endless ITV repeats of Connery and Moore movies since a toddler).

It appears we are the same age! Although I didn't really become a bond fan until 1997-98 ish.

Not quite true but I know what you mean. I grew up with 007 on TV. I remember I'd taped every single one and watched them to death. So when Goldeneye came out just before my 12th birthday I was so excited! Everything for my birthday was Goldeneye. The single (on tape) the making of book (which I read over and over again).
At that point in my life I either wanted to be James Bond and work for MI6 (I actually wrote them a letter and I got a fantastic response on official letterheaded paper) or to make a James Bond film. I decided to follow the path of being a filmmaker and that's what I do professionally now and it's all thanks to 007 and Goldeneye.

We're all around the same age. Mid to late twenties.
I take it you played the Goldeneye N64 game non stop growing up? :D

    Yep, and this very game was what got me interested in bond! :D I was intrigued, so from then on I brought all the VHS's, starting with LALD, watched them all in a random order and the rest is history -{

I prefer Daltons unmade third Bond film to Diamonds are Forever and it doesn't even exist. That's how I feel about the 6 year gap.

I became a Bond fan in between LTK and GE because I saw the older Bond movies on TV and VHS. I remember how exited me and my friends were when GE was announced. I also remember that it looked like it took 500 years before we finally had a chance to see it. We went to the first screening and had a Bond themed party before and after where we watched our favorite Bond movies together. The time before the premiere was very exiting too. Every little article or other piece of information was cut out and shared. O, the times before the interweb......

I really hope they can go back to giving us a Bond movie every 2 years.

I personally think it was good for the Series. It gave it the chance to take a rest and whatnot. Yeah it's a shame that Dalton had to leave though.

I think my first knowledge of Bond was with James Bond Jr. Not that I watched that show, only remember the titles. I really was not that invested in Bond in the year GoldenEye came out.

It would have been nice to have seen a James Bond film in 1991 and 1993, yes, with Timothy Dalton as James Bond. Sadly it never happened.

The first Bond film I ever saw was Goldeneye in theaters so I only found out about the gap later on. It is a shame since I really appreciate the harder edge of TD and LTK. John Glen was a great director and cranked out new 007 adventures like clockwork.

The gap makes the Brosnan era feel like a reunion of sorts. Kind of like a band that reforms after a hiatus.

Does anyone know if Dalton knew that there was going to be a 6 year wait? Looking at his IMDB page between 89 and 94 he didn't really do any huge projects mostly just Television stuff.

You'd think being the current James Bond in the early 90's he would of got offers for a lot more work. Maybe he turned that down expecting a third Bond film that never came along.

An early 90's Bond would of been cool though. 6 years is also too long to wait I hope the next Bond film is out in 2014 and the one after that 2016 and so on and so forth.

I was eleven when Goldeneye came out and I agree that it felt like we grew up without a Bond.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that Bond movies should go back to the 2 year turn around between films. As much as the wait sucks, I'd rather the production not be rushed to meet its two year deadline. The wait for Skyfall was excruciating, but it was also worth it in my opinion.

Despite a brief reprieve from FYEO, I thought the series was effectively and irreversibly dead with MOONRAKER. Imagine my tortured wait from FYEO until TLD ... and I didn't think TLD was all THAT great, but better than the majority of the previous 4 -5 films (even FYEO had faults; Moore's clearly evident age, for one).

    *runs and ducks*

Besides, (edit) there were legal problems (edit) that stopped production for years. I believe Dalton first turned down the films because he was too young (OHMSS), and either turned down the films again due to his age, or the long-long delay in production.

Part of me believes his best Bond film was THE ROCKETEER. Damn he was great in that film!

I think that John Gardner in his official capacity as James Bond author between 1981 and 1996 was a great exponent of the literary James Bond during the period 1990-1995 when no films were being produced. Perhaps the readers of this thread should point back to the Gardner novels to see how an experimental James Bond film of a Gardner novel might have looked! Here are the titles and their corresponding dates:

    Brokenclaw (1990)
    The Man From Barbarossa (1991)
    Death is Forever (1992)
    Never Send Flowers (1993)
    SeaFire (1994)
    Cold/Cold Fall (1996)
