Missing were You Only Live Twice, All Time High and Tomorrow Never Dies - and Die Another Day and You Know My Name were instrumental only - but, between them, Mary Carewe and Lance Ellington impressively belted their way through every other main title vocal (including NSNA) up to Skyfall. (The Look Of Love was in the mix as well as We Have All The Time In The World.) For me the highlights were Carewe's flirtatiously Lulu-esque rendition of TMWTGG, her accurate recreation of all of Gladys Knight's original soul improvs of the LTK vocal, and her let's-go-for-it duet with Ellington for Another Way To Die. As for Ellington, he did as much justice to Duran Duran and Aha as to Matt Monro, Tom Jones and Paul McCartney. The Philharmonia were faithful to all the pieces across the decades; of particular note was the remarkably engaging orchestral arrangement of Die Another Day.

Couple of links to the BBC i-Player should be good for the next seven days.
Lance Ellington was superb, Mary Carewe has a very good voice, given that every one is so used to Shirley Bassy singing Gold Finger.
Why Lance Ellington didn’t sing Casino Royal theme?
I can only imagine that because Die another day was un -singable, so best left as an instrumental, they thought it would be more balanced if a male vocals song was also played as an instrumentals,
Why didn’t they just leave out die another day(James Bond Politics?)
The instrumental of You know my name was superb but I don’t see why Lance Ellington couldn’t have sang it,
All in all a most highly enjoyable show though.
Because the lyrics are terrible...? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io-jchlnvJM
The order of the film were mixed up, TLD cane out in 2003 apparently, dear old Honor did her best, I actually liked some of her comments, but the singers......
Jesus H Christ, who were they? Apparently they 'grace' us with their presence on the beeb's 'strictly come make a **** of yourself'. IMO they were sodding appalling. It was club singer quality, in fact is rather watch Vic Reeves sing it all. I dunno who she was, but old bingo wing even cracked up at one point, probably at the thought of her pay check, and the colin salmon impersonator sounded like an X Factor reject. I almost expected to hear a 'errrrrr' buzzer sound as 3 large red crosses lit up above him.
What really grits my sh1t is that it's the 50th anniversary concert. What did Babs and Mike do for it, for us, the loyal fans who have supported the franchise and made it the success it is?
2 club singers, scores (pun intended) of factual errors and wheel poor old Honor out of storage and plug her in. Did Babs and Mike even make an appearance?
The lack of public appearances by the top brass of EoN is slowly (for me anyways) giving the impression that they simply sit behind the scenes counting the coin. I know that they've never been known to hog the limelight, but at least one appearance during something like this would be good PR. They'd bring the house down by just showing up.
I remain a huge fan of bond, EoN and Babs and Mike, SF was fantastic and I couldn't think of anything to complain about (my mrs would be flabbergasted at this), but I just wish that the same amount of care and attention to detail was put into these 'treats' as they did the films.
If they'd got some big name stars (bassey, jones, turner, cornell) or even some modern day artists (dare i mention x factor finalists?) to have a go, got the facts right, had several guests to intro the songs and not just leave it to one personal and have Babs and mike make an appearance, then they'd turn what came across as a sideline add-on idea into a proper 50th celebration that was made with the same mantra as the films. It's really got to be 'Everything Or Nothing'.
Rant over,

Don't think this was Grade A official 50th Anniversary Concert, MG....as I said...I've seen a version of this concert twice before and it has toured a few other times too...I think it was just an opportunity for a tie-in deal...
Well auntie went and listed it as 'James Bond 50th Anniversary Gala Concert', so I'd have hoped for something a bit more unique than a rehashed band practice.

Yes, 100%. i've seen this too, and it is enjoyable but not official (ie backed by EON). Honor Blackman is a nice touch, and the fact that Nic Raine did the arrangements does help (he orchestrated JB's scores for AVTAK and TLD).
I thought Mary Carewe’s rendition of Nobody does it better was outstanding.
ansd Lance Ellington Live and and die was Brilliasnt
Another way do die was never one of my favourites but the way they sang it, I may change my mind.
The Orchestra also had so much character who cares whether its official.
I also think the order of the songs was creative license to alternate between the males and female vocals,
1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
After they showed the concert on bbc four they showed a selection of Bond theme performance one of which was Marvin Hamish playing a jazz piano improvisation of Nobody does it better, so I think the
Mary Casrewes rendition will be a version the composer would have approved of .
I also like the pitch bending in a view to a kill
Duran Duran may be an iconic British band but It nice to hear a more sophisticated vocalisation,
The same it true of Madonna Die another day the original worked very well with the Film Title but its nice to hears a full orchestration .
