The Macallan

Has it been confirmed which M is actually drinking? The 10, 12, or 18 Sherry Oak?

Really? I thought the 50 year old was what Silva took a shot of no?

    from jamesbondlifestyle...
As we know from previous films, M likes a strong drink. And in SkyFall M drinks another fine whisky: The Macallan. We can't see yet which exact age the whisky has, but looking at the shape of he bottle and colors on the label, it is definitely The Macallan Sherry Oak whisky, either 10-, 12- or 18-year-old. We would guess M has a delicate taste and prefers the 18-year-old, but it might also be the more popular 12-year-old, or even the 10-year-old if MI6 has had some budget cuts. The 18-year-old is three times as expensive as the 12-year-old.

We also see Bond sip some Macallan twice (vintage unknown), once while enjoying death and in M's apartment. Based on the glimpse of the bottle and label seen in SkyFall, it looks like the version of the label where the bottom half is light-blue or light grey (see images left, below). It's not yet confirmed which exact version (10, 12 or 18) he drinks.

In the same film, villain Silva (Javier Bardem) and James Bond drink a vintage The Macallan in very small whisky shot glasses (see image on the left). This is a Macallan 1962 Fine and Rare Vintage, in the film it is mentioned as being "50 year old", which is also a reference to the 50th anniversary of Bond.

    Maybe that is incorrect?

Here's a cropped and tweaked image of the bottle.

Don't think it will help much, but it's the best I can do on the iPhone

Thanks. Yeah, I think that one is prob the 12 of 18 sherry oak.

They mention bond drinking the regular fine oak in other scenes. ....i.e. enjoying death bar scene and another.. Can't find any pictures of that though to speculate..

Well with the bottle, neck and label all being identical, I think you'll have a hard time guessing from that pic.

My guesstimate would be that it'll be whichever is the most expensive. :))

being a macallan connoisseur myself, Bond is drinking Macallan 18 Fine Oak in his "enjoying death" scene and also in M's apartment. The Sherry Oak which is slightly more expensive and a lot rarer, is a far better drink though in my opinion. M never drinks Macallan: she merely has a bottle of it on her desk. She drinks some form of Cognac/VSOP in all scenes. In hashima, as we know, they drink Macallan 1962. The 30 year old Shery Oak is almost as good as that and can be purchased from select outlets (very rare once again) for around $1500. Highly recommend it to scotch lovers. 18 year old sherry oak at $200 a bottle is nearly as good.

Macallan is not bad whisky, but it's overpriced. For drinking (not collecting), there are better options (Springbank, Ardbeg, Highland Park, etc)

I'm sorry but... ask anyone who knows about whisky... Last time I talked about whisky here no one knew that they put caramel (E150) in whisky to darken its color. I met the chief marketing guy for Macallan in Toronto last year. Macallan is overpriced, except some of their cask strenght.

And of course, if you want to break the bank (I gave you affordable options), please treat yourself to Brora or Japanese whisky.

Any thoughts on Jonny Walker Blue Label??

Each time I go to the Far East, my business associates (Koreans and Chinese) go nuts over it. At the end of the night when sozzled and taste buds are paralysed they "downgrade" to Macallan 12 year. Great times lol

i'd love to take you up there DZ, but my appearance isn't photogenic and i'd probably bust the lens. :))

i have contemplated doing something along the lines, but decided in the end that its best sometime to stay in the shadows. i simply aint got the time, equipment or knowledge to film, edit and produce a podcast worthy of anyone's time.

a book in the future, maybe.........

Sorry, but I thought we were discussing single malt Scotch. And Scotch only comes from Scotland, last time I checked.

It is the smoothest tasting whiskey I've had: a blend though. I would prefer it to a single malt for everyday drinking, although it is pricey. About the same price as Macallan 18. I alternate between the two for a nightcap. Highly recommend it if you haven't tried...plus it never gives me a hangover!
