AVTAK Villains

After watching AVTAK for the millionth time, I've realized that it features some of the franchise's best villains to date in Walken and Grace Jones. This evil duo boosts the film in my rankings, along with an incredible John Barry score. What do you guys think of the Walken/Jones partnership?

John Barry's score is superb- his action theme (heard in "Snow Job" during the PTS and "Golden Gate Fight" at the climax) is one of his best. The main theme works nicely played softly on flute for the softer moments.
Can't agree with you re Walken (great actor though he is) and Jones (great presence though she has) - there are many better villain/henchman (henchwoman) characters in the series.

I agree with both the fantastic score, and the villains.

I'm not too fussed about Mayday though, although she was interesting. But my real love goes to Zorin, who is IMO the single best villain in the series. Brilliantly acted, memorable, and a pure psycho. So many great things about this film.

Once Stacey whacks Scarpine with the extinguisher, the look on Walken's face is remarkable. The way he rips the axe off the wall while John Barry's score kicks in... gives me chills every time.

I've always loved that part too. Also the way he laughs right before falling to his death, great stuff. IMO Walken saves that film from being the worst of the RM Bonds.

Grace Jones I could take or leave. Her love scene with Moore was awkward at best. It was a little unbelievable how she immediately turned to "good" at the end of the film, but done much better than how Jaws' turn was handled at the end of MR. Still I love the look she gives Zorin right before the detonator goes off.

Yes, I believe the fact that AVTAK featured these villains was used as a marketing thrust on the film's teaser Mayday/Bond poster: "Has James Bond finally met his match?" Max Zorin and Max Largo from Never Say Never Again are surely the biggest duo of loonies ever faced by secret agent James Bond 007!

I'm surprised at the love for AVTAK most fans seem to really dislike that one, I watched it recently and really enjoyed it. Definitely Roger's best of the 80's. May Day is very cool for a villain and Zorin was pure evil. Killing all of his workers and leaving May Day to her death made him the ultimate villain.

Great point! This film cracks my top 10 Bond films at no. 10 and i think it's very under-appreciated.

Me too. It only got better. Great actor!

See him in True Romance and in Nick of Time for proof of this - an acting masterclass - like he says "words are little bombs!"

Yep, AVTAK is just a great bond film from start to finish. It tends to be seen as one of the weaker ones along with TMWTGG, DAF, MR, and DAD, and IMO AVTAK is by far the best of these 5.
