December 26th 2012 saw the passing of a much respected pioneer of miniature effects photography, Gerry Anderson. And for those who are going to say "what's this got to do with James Bond?" allow me to explain. Many of those working on miniature EFX in the 1960's/70's/80's cut their cloth working on the early Gerry Anderson epics before moving onto Bond. In particular Derek Meddings who even had an on screen character in the "Fireflash" Thunderbirds episode named after him "Meddings" (the technician who initially tried to stop the airliner crashing). Scott Tracy was sculpted from a likeness of Sean Connery & Ursula Andress photo reference was utilised for the sculpting of Lady Penelope I believe. Roger Moore photo reference was used while Captain Scarlet's head was being sculpted and earlier Lois Maxwell lent her voice talents & likeness to Atlanta in Stingray. Although not Bond, later in life I realised Tintin in Thunderbirds had the likeness & indeed a pretty good voice likeness of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys. In short without Mr Anderson & his pioneering team of sculptors & model makers the world of 007 may not have looked as spectacular as it does today for which I thank him. RIP Mr Anderson.....Spectrum is Green, FAB!
