Is it time the Aston Martin DB5 no longer appeared?

I love the car for how it looks and what it represents. I also love the modern Aston Martin's and it feels like by bringing back the DB5 like in Goldeneye, Casino Royale and Skyfall, it's only causing dis-continuity and if Bond is to be modernised, then surely his cars need the same treatment?
I get why they have appeared, to keep some of the classic aspects of Bond, but after Skyfall celebrated 50 years of Bond, maybe it's time the DB5 was put in storage and left there and a new car was brought in to create it's own legend.

P.S- I know Silva destroyed the Skyfall DB5 which might prevent it from coming back, but with continuity in Bond it's still possible

I think the idea with Skyfall was to compete the reboot and wipe the slate clean.

Next time we see Bond there'll be a new MI6 (please mr Logan include a Q branch scene) and new M's office, no ancestral home and no DB5. Even the PPK got ditched twice, a sign that Bond will ask for something with a higher capacity in bond 24? A dress down by the armourer, DN style might be a cool nod.

If the DB5 was there in the background of Q branch being repaired/rebuilt/stripped of parts or something I wouldn't mind. To be honest they'll have to be pretty imaginative if they resurrect it to its former glory, so a safe bet is it won't be there.

I liked it in TND where bond used it as his own car and had something more current provided by the firm.

But, bear this in mind, that Aston Martin DB5 is the only car I have ever witnessed being cheered at on its introduction. When that lock up door went back and the lights came on people were audibly happy.

If I'm honest, I'd like it to stay and have some screen time, but not as the company car.

I dont believe so. James Bond is a man who appreciates the finer things in life. The DB5 is most definitely one of life's finer things.

When I saw Skyfall the DB5 scene got a huge cheer from the crowd. I have mixed feelings about this. The filmmakers need to find new and innovative ways to please the crowd instead of pulling the nostalgia strings.

I enjoyed the DB5 scenes in Goldeneye, but I would much rather see 007 get a current 2013 aston martin like in CR. Daniel needs to get his own trademark vehicle the same way Rog had the Lotus and Tim had the Volante.

No, I think it still needs a place in the filmic Bond lore at the very least - let it stay!

i cant decide,, however the db5 was planned to be destroyed in goldeneye..
  • Kent007Kent007 Posts: 338MI6 Agent
I will never doubt it's beauty and legacy but now we've all seen it destroyed in Skyfall, it may be hard for it to make a comeback. It may be easier to build a new legacy with a new car than to force it's inclusion.

I loved the DB5's appearance in Skyfall. I thought it was a fine nod to the past in the 50th anniversary. Sadly, I do think the question is moot however, as just like Dame Judi I really don't think we'll see it again...at least not until after the next re-boot!

I agree with Firemass above. I love the DB5, but think Craig's bond is more suited to the DBS. When I watched CR in the Cinema there was still a gasp as the DBS was revealed. It looked stunning, shame there was no proper chase to follow!!

I think Skyfall was probably the DB5's final farewell (and a brilliant one at that).

    haha.

I'll appreciate the DB5 in Skyfall a lot more if we never see it again. Craig looked pretty pissed when it got blown up.

I think the DB5 should stay, not with the gadgets but as Bonds "hobby" just as the Bentley is in the books, give him a modern car as well but for background keep the DB5.

Maybe in the next film he could come across a fleet of dismanteld DB5s on an archeological dig in Burma, all ready to be brought back to Blighty. :)

I had to skip down to avoid spoilers.

I didn't like the DB5 showing up in Brosnan's hands. If Q was still maintaining such a vintage vehicle,... WTF? What a waste of taxpayers' money. And if it was the original Thunderball DB5 (remember the "original" was wrecked at Auric Goldfinger's factory and almost assuredly dismantled), would Bond have "inherited it" when removed from service? Certainly, it would be a lame duck with all the modifications removed, but the damage from modifications left behind.

In the books, Bond had a sort of anachronistic Bentley, a "sports car" of a bygone era that he lovingly maintained. In years past, I fantasized that a modern Bond might also have a "classic car" of his own, perhaps a series 1-1/2 Jaguar XKE. Now THAT would be a Bentley successor. I seem to recall a book reference to him maintaining it in a corner of dept. garages (Q branch?); I liked thinking that Bond kept an XKE or DBS down there while taking a Lotus or some other modern crap on missions.

I rather like that in CR (2006), Bond acquires one and of course can keep it. As a young guy, with a likely short career and fast death, a classic car that could take him out of his day job world might be nice fit.

Okay, off to see SKYFALL at the local cine....

In terms of the DB5 it would make more sense if Skyfall came before Casino Royale. We see it get destroyed and then 007 wins another one.

Does Bond still own the one from CR? It obviously wasn't the tricked out one in Skyfall. (with the ejection seat and machine guns)

    hmm

I mean, we watch it get destroyed in Skyfall. So that motivates Bond to wins another DB5 in Casino Royale. That would make sense, except the films are in the wrong order.

i cant see them bringing it back really but id like to have it mentioned in the next film in some form, possibly when he is given a new car we see him disgruntled with it or something like that :))

i personally really liked its reappearance in Brosnans take on the bond films as his own personal car in GE TND and TWINE (which is in a deleted scene when driving to Kings Funeral)

There are lots of reasons CR-06 is my favorite Bond film, the Aston's are a classic example.

As Mini G said, its nice to see the Classic car but not as the company car. - Don't get me wrong, the DBS doing cartwheels was sad as well as exciting, but QoS had another one. - That also got shot up. I am uncertain we will see the DB5 again in Mr Craig further Bond films after what happened in Skyfall. I was more upset about that than the "other" upsetting scene. However, the car is as much a part of Bond's world as the suits, the women, Q's toys and M frowning at Bonds antics.
No Aston was not part of Sir Rogers films but it did come back eventually. The DB5 is beautiful classic car, and the Aston Martin range is part of the format, and the legacy. I certainly hope we do see them (inc the DB5) again.

Plus from a commercial perspective, look how many models, toys and driving experience sales they generate!
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

I was disappointed that the DB5 in Skyfall has gadgets. I thought it was the car he won in Nassau, and he'd shipped home to London. I "get" that the script has Bond saying "we have to go back in time." I understand the plot device of his using the machine guns (suspending disbelief that you can mow down a line of guys with fixed guns in a stationary car). It's a fantastic metaphorical switch, starting up the car, going to Scotland, etc. But it's pretty outlandish that

    a) a MI5 DB5 with all the 1964 gadgets is still around and functiuonal, and
    b) Bond has easy access to it, or owns it. I can't be the DB5 that Dimitrios lost to him.

But it has a dreamy sort of quality that I think rises Skyfall above the formulaic action movie realm into a Story. Skyfall certainly has a story that I've been thinking about...

I don't see the "motivation" for Bond to "win another" in Nassau. I do see a motivation for the filmmakers to perhaps show Bond having some kind of "fun car" for when he's not on a mission.

Disclosure: Aside from Goldfinger, I have never fully accepted the conceit that MI6 or any other government branch has funds to convert several $300,000 vehicles into spy vehicles. Also, Bond doesn't always need to look like a rich jetsetter, and doesn't need an exoticar. In Goldfinger, there was a specific reason. It (and the various Lotus cars) has become a trope that gets slapped onto a film and for me takes away from the story. I rather hope that the DB5's descruction in Skyfall means they will no longer be trotting out a 1963 vehicle to look so out of place in a 21st century spy yarn. But I'm one of those curmudgeons who dislikes more of the films than I like.
