has anyone ever tried to build a replica rebreather?

I have been all over the internet looking for replicas of this....it does not look like it would be hard to build out of a set of c02 gun tubes but I just need a little advice or design ideas?

thanks for the help!

I have a few different ones made by different skilled people over the years including the official SD Studios one. Do not get tempted by ones from South America as they are very poor quality. if you have a bit of engineering ability and access to tools then it should be more rewarding to contruct one yourself. I did one some years ago with screw on adapters for the bulbs you buy for cream whippers!

    Gun tubes as you call them are to big, you would need to look for co2 sparklets -{

That is a really nice job and the box really sets it off. Years ago I did a custom job for a customer with a special box made to look as though it was issued at the time. I used a US Forces metal box ( originally for a micrometer) this was painted and sprayed up, inside was the rebreather and six spare cannisters along with the killer last pieces, a small spanner, spare o rings and brush for cleaning. It looked so real

Off the top of my head.....

    Wooden box
    Acrylic for display stand
    Gold effect plastic for plaques
    Flocked plastic for display tray
    MDF
    Brass tacks
    Self adhesive felt
    Brass bar
    Brass sheet
    Threaded bar
    Sparklet bulbs
    Casting resin
    Primer paint
    White primer paint
    Sharpie marker (pete's favourite)
    BA CSK bolts
    Araldite
    Cigar tube
    Gold plating kit
    Silicone rubber for mould
    Sandblaster
    Sand paper
    Milling machine
    Rotary table with chuck
    Milling cutters
    Lathe
    Lathe tools
    Centre drills
    Drill set
    Electricity
    Workshop

You know I don't - I collect merchandise but I used to love making things. I made tons of cool stuff over the years and sold them on thinking one day I would make another for myself, never did! Making one is a challenge, replicating it is dull and boring 8-)

I'm sure MG understands the thrill of making far outweighs the ownership. The making it work, getting that stupid detail right that 99% of people would not notice or even care about.

My favourite was ripping the guts out of the LTK polaroid camera, installing a laser and reworking the mechanism so it would spit out the Xray photo when the button was pressed. I think that sold to Cars of The Stars.

You should do a YouTube video on how to make a breather. If I had your skills, having the opportunity to say the timeless Blue Peter quote "...here is one we prepared earlier..." would be too great a temptation to avoid. Although "...and now, back to the studio". Runs a close second.

THUNDERBALL making of doc has a bit where the set dresser or production designer was called up by MoD types asking how long the rebreather would last for. When he answered, "Um, for as long as you can hold your breath," there was silence and a click. :D
