Lack of thought in the plot.

One of the things that has bugged me since the film came out and spoils it is:
The Man With The Golden Gun, when the Sheriff from Live and let die boat chase scene, I think his name was something pepper, was looking at the Car Bond uses for the pursuit of Scaramanga in a car showroom. Now obviously he was on holiday (Vacation for american readers), now when I have been on holiday abroad I have never felt the urge to buy a car, and there are several reasons for this, the countries I have visited all drive on the Right so it would be a left hand drive car which would not be practical in England as we drive on the left, then there is the very costly expense of getting the newly purchased vehicle to England and import tax expense and so on, here in England there are many suitable outlets where I can buy and buy a car from.

Clearly sheriff Pepper is American and his Job title suggests he works and lives in the US, and I am pretty sure they have ample Car showrooms where he would be best suited making a major purchase such as a car.

Surely the director should have come up with a better plot line to get this comedic character in Bonds car than that, just So Moore could deliver the line " I sure am boy"

You're quite right, it's a weak way to get the comedy relief character (his name is J.W. Pepper, btw) into the car chase. He's only there at all because he proved popular in the previous film and isn't necessary for the action.

I've always thought that was odd too. But I think he ruins the sequence regardless. That and the slide whistle on the bridge jump are easily the worse parts of that film.

    "I got me a reg'lar Ben-Hur down here..."

I think he's looking at a car because he's not interested in the tourism. His wife is. Still one of the silly things that mars the movie.

I think he probably wants to see something American, so he goes into a Dodge showroom.

I remember how, in 1974, it felt to see J. W. Pepper back: it seemed significant, exciting and a lot of fun - because the extended chase sequence in which he'd appeared in the previous movie had made such an impression and had really launched Roger Moore as Bond! Nowadays, I just cringe at Pepper's racist lines in TWTGG and the way in which we're expected to enjoy these as 'comic relief'.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
