Quantum of Solace - sense of fun sorely missing

Just rewatched QOS for first time in four years as part of my posting about each film on my blog. Its reputation is pretty much deserved as far as I'm concerned, though I certainly don't feel it's the worst Bond (probably half a dozen at least I'd put below it). Main issue: the sense of fun that was present in CR is totally absent here and it affects the movie. More analysis here:

Nice review, and I think the phrase .............
    a disappointing follow-up to a great film
    ................ Is perfectly apt. -{

i've been struck by how many times rewatching all the films where I don't think it's reputation matches the experience. For example, I personally think OHMSS is way overrated now while I actually really liked Octopussy. With QOS, its reputation is pretty much dead on.

Over time my views on QOS have softened a little as I've gone from
hating it with a vengence to merely thinking it could of been done
    so much better.
Sadly I'm a Big OHMSS fan, so I can't agree with your view on it
    being overrated :007)
Octopussy is a Great film with many spectular sequences, I love all
    the train action etc.

Reputation is a funny thing, isn't it ? Sometimes it's hard to watch a 007 film with a completely unbiased opinion because we've all heard and read so much about each film.
    My current 10 favorite:

Todd, I believe Quantum of Solace was an actual title from a Fleming short story. Also The World is Not Enough was a phrase borrowed from OHMSS. But yeah, Die Another Day and Tomorrow Never Dies are a bit generic.

    Anyway...

I predict there will be a slight backlash from the "sense of fun sorely missing" in the new harder edged Bond films. Surely there must be a large number of fans who miss the gadgets and the humor. Roger Moore-era is not in style right now, but poised to make a comeback! hehe

Just finished watching QoS and I quite enjoyed it. I like the PTS and the opera scene and agree with you that it's not one of the worst Bond films. However, I also agree that it's a bad sequel to CR and that we move from Bond first seeing Greene to Bond killing Greene very quickly, probably to quickly. Also, it has the gun barrel scene at the end for some bizarre reason.

I really can't see why people don't like QOS, I think it is a great film, and find it difficult to find fault with it, the opening car chase is too jumpy and it is difficult to see what is going on, and the music could be better, Gun barrel at the beginning would have been better, Story is ok, but I think the opera scene is really cool, and overall it is high up on on my list

All that has to happen is for a studio exec to figure that Skyfall made a billion because it was 'lighter', so even lighter would mean even more money!! ;)

One of their, weaknesses are going too far from the last film which was successful for example QOS went too far into the, gritty Bond like Bourne which was hinted on in CR. DAD went too,far in the gadgets from TWINE and MR went too far into, the campy area from the successful TSWLM.
