GoldenEye vs. Die Another Day

Pierce Brosnan has always been my favourite James Bond but I can easily admit that none of his films were absolutely exceptional. When I was growing up GoldenEye was my favourite Brosnan Bond by many many miles and the other three were pretty mediocre but as I look back on retrospect at that era I now think that GoldenEye has not aged very well and (call me an idiot) I now consider Brosnan's final outing as Bond his best, the more I watch Die Another Day the more I enjoy the fun side of it whereas the more I view GoldenEye the more I find it slightly drab. Many of my friend think I'm Bonkers for preferring the ludacris CGI filled Die Another Day over the suave, elegent GoldenEye and I can see why but do any other Bond fans happen to side with me? :#

Though I do think DAD has it good moments, I think it just crosses the line and becomes a bit too unrealistic. Even Pierce Brosnan on "Everything Or Nothing" ridicules the wind surfing the tsunami bit.
I, like you, grew up loving Goldeneye and still do to this day and think it's the best film Brosnan did.

I can completely understand this view and yes the wind surfing bit was ridiculous .... In fact the whole section with Gustav Graves' super sled is beyond fantasy but I still think it is just so entertaining. There are much better action sequences though, mainly the P.T.S, the sword fight and the ice chase although that is also wondering in the realm of fantasy.

The moments you mentioned were what I meant by "Good moments", I also like the fact Bond gets tortured and the whole sub-story of the trade of Bond and Zaio. I like the film and agree with you that it's entertaining but I just get the impression that people tried too hard to make it impressive as it was the 20th Bond film and that if they had toned it down a bit, it would've been a better film.

Goldeneye all the way for me. DAD... I'm not gonna say what's wrong with it because so many people have gone through all that before, but I will say that my favourite parts of DAD were the torturing scenes, the fencing fight, and the scene where Graves kills his father. But other than that, DAD ranks as my second least favourite bond movie I'm afraid (but that's not to say I don't enjoy it).

Goldeneye on the other hand I find to be an excellent bond film, with many redeeming features. The dam jump, the tank chase, Xenia Onatopp, and the satelite dish fight are the highlights for me.

I agree with this totally, it did seem like an over bloated attempt at a Hollywood blockbuster

Yeah, no denying that GoldenEye's stunts were tremendous (as were Tomorrow Never Dies) and that Die another Day cannot hold up to them, I am by no means saying that Die Another Day is a more impressive film just that I somehow love the way it moves along and I think once you try and skip the fact that it is attempting to modernise the franchise far too much it is about as entertaining as a film can be. I can completely understand why it gets horrible reviews though, you kind of need to go into the film knowing its totally ludicrous in order to thoroughly enjoy it.....if that makes sense lol

I understand how you find enjoyment in it, and I must say, the sword fight was a neat idea. I do feel like it was too much trying to be like a 60s Bond, or a gadget laden Bond when the world had passed it. I like the supercar chase on ice, but GE is,far superior, GE is like number 6 on my list, when DAD is no 23. But I am not bashing it it's worthy Bond film and it's nice to see appreciation for it.

It's even very hard for me to say why I prefer it over GoldenEye because, as you mentioned, GoldenEye is far superior . I will admit when I first seen Die Another Day I hated it and felt like it strayed from the Bond I knew and loved far too much but I can now appreciate what the film was trying to be and just how entertaining it is.....I also think it stands higher on my list just because so many other people dislike it and I can somehow enjoy it every time...wish I could say the same for Moonraker.

Well, I like MR, it's done with so much fun and it has class. But, it's my lowest Moore. You like DAD, but what's your fav Bond film?

FYEO is a great film, my second favourite rog. film behind LALD and I loved skyfall but I've only seen it twice so I havn't really been able to gather my full opinion on it yet. OP is a real fun film

The Dalton films are pretty high on my list too. So you can see that I love a wide range of Bond films and I do own some Bond Books.

Fleming fans adore him, but everybody entitled to their own opinions. I don't really like Brosnan as much as the others.

lol thanks for the tip :D and understandable, most of the Bond fans I know are not overly keen on Brosnan mainly cause his films went downhill real fast

Agree, he was fine in GE but his films went bad. But I must respect him as an actor he's a great guy, and he always have his best effort when the scripts were bad. For best attitude as an actor, the award goes to Roger Moore, he's a lot of fun and a great man. He happily goes to interviews and pops his head into Bond mania for Bond fans.

no doubt, seen him in many bond interviews very loyal to bond. Even though the recurring complaint of A View to a Kill was that he was to old for the part you never hear people say he looked bored of it....and after 7 films all credit to that fact....connery could barely handle 5

An important thing to mention was that Moore was excellent with crowds and with fans, he was generally great with people Connery was an unheard of actor until suddenly he was boosted to super stardom.

I do find it funny how many people find Connery as THE Bond, the original and the best yet his attitude to Bond as a franchise and to Broccoli and Saltzman stunk

true, was Dalton not totally overwhelmed by the sheer number of fans and media representatives as well?

Yes, he was. In the living daylights doco it said he had trouble with crowds and I remember watching the, press review when he was announced, he seemed to be very awkward.

thought so, and a fair point made there. Many people think fondly towards sean connery as Bond and say he was the ultimate bond but really he disliked the role.....mind you that does raise the question w?hy he returned to it twice

I think he was off and on because he didn't really know . He was sick of the attention but he came back in DAF for the dosh. In NSNA he came back to rival Cubby perhaps? Or because he secretly enjoyed it?

If you watch "Everything or Nothing" you get the impression that he came back to spite Cubby though I suppose the documentary is biased.

I think it was a mixture of that and because he enjoyed the role.

Correct, maybe we are right then. But, Connery didn't hate Cubby. I heard a story second hand supposedly it was on the everything or Nothing doco about Connery talking to Cubby not long before Cubby died, something about Cubby telling him he was always THE Bond in,his eyes etc.

Yeah, when Cubby was dying Connery rang him and Cubby apparently said "We made something special" and then he told Connery that he loved him and Connery told him he loved him too. I think Connery probably realised that enough was enough and that on a personal level, it was time to put their differences aside.
