Rear Projection Problem

DieAnotherDayDieAnotherDay Glasgow, ScotlandPosts: 460MI6 Agent
Does anyone else think that many scenes in older Bond films are spoiled quite a bit due to very poor rear projections? In particular I am thinking of the "just a drop in the ocean" scene from YOLT, he timid chase in Dr. No and a hell of a lot from Goldfinger.

It was probably the best they could do with the technology they had.
It's the same for many films of that era.

yeah agreed but it just seems so poorly handled sometimes, especially when aki's car is turning round corner after corner and she never moves th als wheel. oh and also the sped up footage on the boat at thunderballs finale was painfully bad

Even today I think it's also Bad when the stars are driving a car and you can tell
by the height or rather lack of height of passing cars that, they are on a trailer
being pulled behind a car while filmng. :))

in some cases it's not so bad. that's one reason I love LALD though, there are very very few rear projection shots

It was mainly the 60s yes, I reckon OHMSS was a breakthrough in shooting action scenes and I don't remember any rear projection though there was some in the MR cable car fight.

there was a few bad Rear P. shots in the finale of OHMSS but they were mostly quick cuts, there was just some poor dubbing in that film (and a few others)

Yeah, there was, and even Lazenby was dubbed when he was playing Sir Hillary Bray!

some of that dubbing was not to bad. Tbh Goldfinger was the worst dubbed as there was many scenes where his mouth never matched his wirds or was not even moving at all.

I know right, I have trouble watching that film. Goldfinger getting sucked out of,the plane was pretty bad as well, was it not?

it is a bit cringeworthy nowadays but back that would of probably looked amazing (maybe) but it was still a cool death

another note: is it just me or does YOLT look like a very cheap film, even compared to the other 60's bonds. I've heard so many good reviews of it but to me it seems as if they were cutting corners just to get it finished....i guess im saying it looks pretty rushed

That doesn't make sense compared to how much cash they raked in from TB.

yeah I know. it just doesn't seem like as much care was put into it compared to the previous 4 films

You know what, I must agree like they were doing it halfheartedly knowing they would get, cash. (but, they spent heaps of money on,it)

In the moment, I notice, but it never actually hurts the film for me. A couple of dramatic scenes later and I have no reason to linger on the less impressive technology.

I think that well posted comment by Mr Beech kind of puts an end to this thread. They may seem annoying but after some great scenes later they don't ingerr and are soon forgotten by how great the rest is.

Haha, there's a LOT of rear projection in OHMSS. I know they didn't like Lazenby doing much skiing, though he said he snuck off to ski a lot between takes, and Broccoli or Saltzman nearly blew a fuse seeing him down on the slopes from the cable car.

I rewatched the making of documentary, I love how Rigg apparently did a lot of her own driving, though she wasn't supposed to. What a plucky, classy lady. Looks, brains, talent, wit, and oh did I mention looks. Frankly I think she's about the best actress they've ever had for a leading lady in a Bond flick. Peter Hunt lucked out.

In my favorite Bond film, From Russia with Love, not only do you have terrible rear projection, but you can tack on horrible editing (with the Citroen Traction 11BL tailing Kerim's Rolls-Royce, it's obviously THREE different cars, including one that we only see in the rear projection shots...each one has radically different levels of trim and even different-colored hubcaps). Still, the plot is so strong that it doesn't demean it for me. This isn't a Kananga death scene-type deal; it was genuinely the best they had available at the time.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?

Yes, these back projection scenes seem really bad in the Bond films given the budget at hand. TV series like The Saint suffered from the same type of thing!
