Anybody out there wish that Roger Moore had been in Diamond Are Forever as opposed to Sean Connery?
I mean, think about it, how much did Connery's (expensive) presence hurt the film rather than help it along? Couldn't they have gotten a cheaper lead actor than Sean Connery!?!
Guys, I just now finished watching TMWTGG again (my new Ultimate DVD of it), and it was as great as ever (but it looked prettier). This is SO definitely my favourite Moore Bond. I *LOVE* that Scaramanga dies, and then the movie continues because the mission isn't complete. His twisted stupid fascination with Bond was his weakness, and Bond exploited it. Goodnight in that bikini, the music, the Meddings miniature detonations... I'm at a loss to explain how my fellow Bond fans can't totally love this flick. ?:)
Though it's not my favorite Roger Moore movie by far, I do agree on a lot of words you said here. I have always liked TMWTGG. And I still enjoy watching it very much. I would definitely include that one in the list pointed out by the starter of this thread. To be honest I enjoy most of Roger Moore's movies a lot in their own way. I'd say my least favorite one's are LALD and AVTAK.
TSWLM and FYEO are among the best Bond movies out there.
To be honest, I loved every one of Roger Moore's films. There are some I prefer more than others, but they were all entertaining to watch.
I'd put MR at the bottom, however. I thought the acting was mediocre at best. Roger Moore didn't seem up to his usual strength either, and I'm guessing it's because he didn't really have much to work with. I thought Drax was rather bland.
All the others, I love. They each have something special. LALD has its terrific score. TMWTGG has brilliant acting all around and arguably the series' best villain in Scaramanga. TSWLM had a brilliant performance by Roger Moore along with a grand final battle. MR does have one thing I really enjoyed and that was the score. I thought the title song was wonderful, regardless of the senseless lyrics hahaha. FYEO has an intriguing storyline. Octopussy has outstanding locations. AVTAK has even better locations and brilliant acting by Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Grace Jones, and even Tanya Roberts did alright as Stacey.
So I'd have to say all of Roger's films are good in my book. I know other books would list otherwise, but a sense of variety is what makes AJB what it is.
I watched "Live and Let Die" Again last night, and I'm surprised at how much more I enjoyed it. It's depiction of African Americans is extraordinarily questionable, but Moore's not quite as jokey as he is in the other films. Yaphet Kotto makes for a great villain. He may be one of the ones at the top level for screen time. Jane Seymour is lovely, Geoffrey Holder and Julius Harris rise above the limitations of the characters to create two vivid henchmen, and I even managed to get a laugh out of JW Pepper. "WHAT ARE YOU? Some kinda DOOMSDAY MACJINE??" Moore also looks very cool at the end in full black with the Magnum. I might have to add it to my regular watch list.
TMWTGG has a lot of promise, and crackles when Christopher Lee is on screen. The man's got presence to the nth degree, and I even get a little miffed at Bond when he keeps cracking jokes while Scaramanga is telling him the story of the elephant. Nick Nack is an acceptable henchman, Goodnight, not so much. I like Britt Ekland, and she's nice to look at, but she's upstaged by Maud Adams who turns in a fine performance (Echos of Lupe Lamora, with a worse ending for the character) and she does too many stupid things to be believable as a secret agent. It was like Rosie Carver from LALD was reincarnated. She was passable as a supporting character, but taking her character traits and turning them into the main female lead was a bad idea. She's not Tiffany Case or Stacey Sutton bad, but damn it, she's trying. The final duel is pretty intense, though it raises some questions (Why does Scaramanga put a loaded gun in the dummy's hands?) Bringing JW Pepper back was a bad call. He works in LALD. He doesn't in TMWTGG. Parts of the film don't wow me though, and while Christopher Lee is great, he's not in the film enough to make it spectacular. Still, all in all, an enjoyable Bond with rewatchability value.
I definitely think The Spy Who Loved Me and For your Eyes Only are the best of the Moore's. Moonraker needed a better script and a more lively villain. It's basically a remake of TSWLM. I enjoy it, but it's not one of the best. Octopussy was alright. I don't love it, or hate it. I do like Louis Jordan's villain and Henchman. I prefer "A View to a Kill" to Octopussy, but that's because it managed to snag Christopher Walken. Even though the ending fight is pretty stagy, there's just something about him chasing Bond with an axe. Also, Patrick Macnee and Patrick Bauchau shine in their supporting roles.
I've never disliked TMWYGG, it's just that I LIKE Lee so much in in that the scenes where he's not around are slightly boring. I don't care if JP Pepper is buying souvenirs. Let's get back to Christopher Lee, damnit. He's not given quite enough screen time to truly make the movie rock, and I wish the final duel had been a little longer.

I suppose personal ranking would be:
TSWLM
FYEO
AVTAK
LALD/TMWLGG (Tie)
Moonraker/Octopussy (Tie)
Roger that. My sentiments exactly!
My personal ranking would be:
TSWLM 10/10
AVTAK 10/10
MR 8/10
LALD 8/10
FYEO 8/10
OP 7/10
TMWTGG 7/10
but it's a very close race after the top 2 spots. I also have renewed appreciation for TMWTGG thanks to chrisisall and Silhouette Man.
