The best Blofeld

As I was thinking about the best villians, I got to thinking who is the best Blofeld. I'm counting only the ones that you actually see unlike FRWL or TB.

1. Telly Savalas- OHMSS- the best in my opinion. Calm, focused, a little psycho & a big chunk of genius.

2. Donald Pleasence- YOLT- he's good but not sinister enough.

3. Charles Gray- DAF- camp & unbelievable.

4. Max Von Sydow - NSNA- like most of the film, ridiculous.
Tell me, does the toppling of American missiles really compensate for having no hands?

    1. Faceless Blofeld (FRWL and TB) To me the most menacing version of Blofeld.
    2. Telly Savalas (OHMSS) Nice and relaxed
    3. Donald Pleasence (YOLT) A bit over the top maybe
    4. Max von Sydow (NSNA) Maybe the closest to Fleming Blofeld.
    5. Charles Gray (DAF) Don't mind the fact that he is in drag, but far from my favorite movie and no real menace from Blofeld

I would have to agree with Peppermill that Anthony Dawson's form and the voice of Erich Pohlmann are Blofeld at his freakiest, but my order for visual interpretation would be:

    1. Donald Pleasence. He's just...Creepy. The scar, the voice. Creepy. He pets that cat like there's no tomorrow, he walks oddly, and did I mention he's creepy?

    2. Telly Savalas. He would have been my number one until the script screwed him over near the end of OHMSS. The whole sequence where he tries to seduce Tracy just doesn't work. Granted, he shows strains of being ruthless when he tells her if she doesn't please him, he'll kill her, but still....Blofeld's more of a presence when he's only interested in one goal. His puppydog antics after Tracy starts giving him the time of day just look like the prom queen stringing along the class nerd. And no other Blofeld, IMO, would not see what she's up to, since she starts in as soon as the helicopters put in an appearance. I don't see Pleasence's Blofeld letting the helicopters anywhere near Piz Gloria, no matter persuasive Marc-Ange Draco is. It's a shame, because Savalas' overall performance is stellar, but that sequence drops him down for me.

    3. Max Von Sydow. When I first watched the Connery's, and heard Pohlmann's voice, I thought it WAS Max Von Sydow (I was young) I was happy to see they used him for NSNA because he does sound like the Blofeld of old. It's a crying shame 90 percent of what he filmed was cut, and he basically has just an extended cameo.

    4. John Hollis. He's not officially Blofeld, but he is. And while he has a brief appearance and ends up getting killed, he still has Bond at more of a disadvantage and seems more of a threat than:

    5. Charles Gray. I like him, but he's the least intimidating Blofeld and the script and direction let him down at every turn. It seems like they were purposely trying to make a Blofeld that was no match at all for James Bond. It worked. Gray has done FANTASTIC work as villains in other films, such as "The Devil Rides Out". He has the talent, and the ability, but the script gives him no chance at all to do it.
