The Tom Ford Shanghai Shawl Collar Tuxedo Thread

Well it comes to this

Did any member actually manage to score one of these? I know they were in the selfridges store as while back. Also, a current budget alternative would be nice to see/talk about as well.

and If I remember correctly this was on sale at selfridges a while back. Did anyone buy? I might be in the market for one of these (my wallet just jumped out of my pocket, walked over to the rafter with rope and hung itself) :007)

Haha, I saw mention of the one at selfridges, I forgot the price but of course it was through the roof. Have you seen Magnoli's replica? I was so close to pulling the trigger, great price!

the magnoli looks nice but i worry about quality. (Every product ive bought from him falls short. Its been years but its a big enough issue to steer me away from him. For $700 I can probably find a budget close enough. Club Monaco had a blue shawl collar for $700 that was absolutely surperb). I 'think' the price was 1350 GBP (sale price) which is crazy but I wouldnt mind paying that for something I would buy only once. Its just finding one I think is the issue.

Totally agreed. What have you gotten from him? I just picked up his Harrington, hopefully it's good! I have his jacket from Drive and it is absolutely amazing. (not to sound like an advert).

I think that the 1350 GBP is actually not that bad considering the other stuff. I'll look around for one and report back. I was interested myself, but I don't see many 18 year olds walking around with a tux on, so I settled for the Billy Reid instead haha.

yes, if you find a shawl collar midnight blue tux, def let me know. I would def get use out of it. As for my magnoli experience Ive bought several leathers from him and they were all "OK" kinda middle of the road quality but for the money I could do better. (For instance, Rick's leathers over at filmjackets are on par, maybe a smidge better, than magnolis and he charges about $250. Magnoli $695 :( )

Is the pocket square silk or linen on this one? Many thanks.
  • ReturningsonReturningson Posts: 560MI6 Agent
I assume it would be silk, no?

I'd assume linen. Silk isn't usually folded; it's usually puffed like in GoldenEye. It may be cotton. The blue pocket handkerchiefs wore with the suits match the shirt, meaning they are cotton. Temime may have gone the same way with all the handkerchiefs.

I actually don't think you're that off. I went to TF in NYC and I think they told me $3.5-5k
  • ReturningsonReturningson Posts: 560MI6 Agent
does anyone know if they have these in stores? If they did I wouldnt mind driving to the beverly hills TF just to see it.

Wow...That's as close to rape as you can get without intercourse. If someone pulls the trigger, I'd really like to see fit pictures. That's a lot of money for a mtm.

almost everywhere you live you have access to quality stores. (and believe me, I currently work and live in a small town in west Texas). I was also looking to buy a TF from Selfridges (they wouldnt ship) and Harrods. I called Harrods several times and...I spoke with my local men's fashion store and showed them what I was after.

Six weeks later I had a Brioni, in mohair midnight blue made to look almost exactly like the TF (although it wasnt as stylish, it is more elegant, more statesly if you will) for 3K. TF is expensive because its fashionable, its the hot designer name of the moment. 10 years from now someone else will be the new "it" designer, and frankly, TF's styles will look more dated because they're more stylish (IMO)

I donot regret my decision for even a second, and Brioni is way better quality than TF, more elegant and more expensive than TF.
Its all about who you know frankly.

Im just after the TF one. If its only $500 more than the Brioni I would go for the Ford but as to which is better quality is such a subjective subject. I know flannels fashion has one but they want 2995 GBP which is way above what TF would actually charge.
  • ReturningsonReturningson Posts: 560MI6 Agent
and flannels states its "in store" only which makes me wonder if they even have one. I know another member posted a link to an italian site that had one for $3700 but i cant seem to find it.

I have the tux. Can't post pics at the moment as I'm away but there should be a pic or two floating around this site somewhere. It's a stunning piece.
  • ReturningsonReturningson Posts: 560MI6 Agent
saw your pics Shane. Epic to say the least. Can I ask how much and which TF store you got it from?
  • 00-Shane00-Shane Posts: 124MI6 Agent
The price was 3515 euro but I got it for 3000 since I have a good relationship with the store. I actually ordered from TF directly through my store as they stock TF but didn't have my size. This drove the price up by 400 euros since the suit had to be produced but I got an nice discount anyways so it worked out alright in the end.
  • ReturningsonReturningson Posts: 560MI6 Agent
Thats good. Any info on the sizing (ive heard one has to typically size up with Ford items). Whats your stats and whats your size?
  • 00-Shane00-Shane Posts: 124MI6 Agent
I don't think sizing up is necessary at all if you are in good shape. TF suits generally have a longer cut than other brands but they are extremely fitted so unless you look like a mannequin some nipping and tucking is needed. I'm 5'9 with an athletic build, 38in chest and fairly low BF% (workout regularly). I went with a 38S and had the pants hemmed, the sleeves taken up slightly and the jacket taken in an 1 1/4 inches for that nice TF fitted look. The good thing about the O'Connor cut is that it's a shorter jacket so it's a bit more forgiving to those under 6 feet.

damn Shane you are almost EXACTLY my size. When you die, will it to me! :))

Have you tried suitopia.co.uk or itailor? You can construct your own and the prices are sweet!

i admit that the tom ford label does have major attractiveness because its the one Craig wore so thats what Im after.

I'm curious to know what you meant by "it wasn't as stylish, it is more elegant." Do you mind expanding on that a bit?

Yeah, Tom Ford hit the jackpot with these movie appearances. First, they were just overpriced clothes. Now, they're the clothes from the James Bond movies. If it weren't for the latest movie, I probably would have paid much attention to his items.

Stronger shoulders, more streamlined cut instead of being skin tight. Don't get me wrong its still nicely trimmed, just doesn't look like its being stretched (plenty of pictures showing DC like that).

Regular length for the dinner jacket instead of being short like the new cuts, bit fuller lapels instead of being excessively narrow.

The best way I can describe its a more classical look than the more modern -stylish- look that is popular today.

I disagree on the TF assessment. I am no fashionista, but what I do know is TF is known for bringing back Gucci from the gutter. He might not have the history as a Brioni would but he is well known. Although I don't know anything about his own clothing line whether its low quality over-priced items or not. Personally, if I were going to drop that much money for a copy, I would would commission a coat from either Savile Row or one of the houses in Italy. They are cheaper and it would fit u perfectly.

The 'skin tight' and 'stretched' look in Skyfall is certainly down to the tailoring rather than the original cut. I may sound biased since I own the tuxedo, but mine was tailored much less aggressively and therefore appears far more 'streamlined' than DC's one. As for the lapels, sure they are thinner than TF's usual generous sizing but I'd hardly call them excessively narrow.
