    He was a sad old sleazy creep who was a mid ranking member of a particularly malignant crime syndicate, but didn't really deserve such a violent and bizarre death.

    Roll with lions & get clawed. 'Deserving' has nothing to do with it. 8-)
    Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

    Krest knew full well what type of man Sanchez was, and he willingly got himself involved in drug smuggling. No-one pointed a gun to his head and threatened him to do it.

    His death should not be mourned at all.

    No, he had it coming to him, I'd say. :v

    I'd have liked to see him die as he did in the original story, but that was probably unfilmable.

    People might feel sorry for Krest because he is presented as something of a buffoonish weasel but deserving of being dispatched if not so badly.

    Yes, but that could apply to a lesser extent to many or most other Bond characters, including naïve allies like Strawberry Fields, running into dangerous situations and meeting dangerous people like Sanchez (albeit Krest did it for more selfish, socio-politically harmful financial reasons). Krest was not a great guy, but his death felt unneeded and hollow (showing Bond up to be a bit of a psycho himself). Krest was doing business with an overly prideful, hair trigger psychopath like Sanchez, but this was a Krest who was a slowly corrupted Krest at the end of his story and on the verge of his final downfall.

    He was killed by his wife in the original story, wasn't he?

    Yes, and therein lies the fascination with Bond's literary-style character IMO. :o

    Well it's left slightly ambiguous, but I was meaning the way he died (I'm not wanting to spoil it if anyone hasn't read it).

    I'm sure they could manage that with today's CGI -{
