Been a fan of the X-Files since it started back in the 90s. I loved most of the first five seasons, and liked most of the later ones. I think I've blocked out much of seasons 8 and 9.
The revival is okay, but hasn't reached the heights of the first seasons. "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" is the best of the four episodes so far. Not the best Darin Morgan penned episode (tough to beat "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose", "Humbug" or ""War of the Coprophages") but on par with "Jose Chung's From Outer Space". Certainly better than his scripts for Millenium.
It was a good episode, although I wasn't sure whether they were broadcasting The X-Files or Flight of the Conchords that night! )
Now that the series has finished (presumably forever), I have to say that the last episode was as disappointing as the other ones were promising. Once again, nothing was explained...
I hope rating were good enough to consider another mini-season. Yeah, the last episode was not good. But I liked all the others. I liked the way they brought back the smoking man and the lone gunmen. Wish they could have brought back deep throat. CSM: still smokin' the Morleys. )

It may be an option... if they convince the actors. However, with a good series you really need to know when to finish. In the interviews I read before the newest episodes were released they were swearing that this IS the end!

I bought the new event series DVD of six episodes on Thursday past in my local Tescos. Looking forward to watching them as I didn't see any of it on TV. I don't have five on my FreeSat box currently.

I had to log in to rave about the new episode "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat". Like last season, the mythology episodes were duds, but the stand-alone episodes were good. So tonight was the comedic episode written by Darin Morgan....and... it... was... BRILLIANT!
I won't spoil it, but it's about the Mandela Effect and how nostalgia clouds our memories. This episode is a gift to X-Files fans. Watch it on-demand if you missed it.
I haven't seen this new season yet (don't have cable), but did catch the six episodes from a year or two ago.
Youre right, the Big Mythology episodes that began and ended that season were a drag, but the selfcontained "monster of the week" episodes included some clever funny bits. (Mulder on mushrooms dancing to Achy-Breaky Heart. Their next generation doppelgangers replicating the same old arguments. And one where we saw Scully through the eyes of an unreliable witness.)
In fact I found Mythology episodes a drag while watching the original series in the 90s first time round, I got to dread any episode where Krycek would appear. I expect them to leave the endings ambiguous (while still hinting Mulders hypothesis is the correct one), but that worked better with the selfcontained episodes, and some of those were mighty clever indeed. Whereas the mythology episodes I felt I needed to take notes and create a flowchart, and was positive each new installment was contradicting everything that came before. Too much homework for the viewer!
one thing I really did like about that last six episode revival: Vancouver is back! the Vancouver locations are like the third character in the series, I always start leaping up and down when I recognise a location shot. There was one that ended on what looked like a beach in Kitsilano, did that shot ever make me happy!
Totally agree on the Krycek comment.
For me, the "black oil" entity was just too much to take seriously.
I'm glad that we are getting new episodes, but sad at the same time, because the 90's nostalgia just reminds me that life will never be as good as it was back then. But that's just the perspective of a 40 something year old man. No matter how lousy the present day may be, these will be some generation's "good old days".
