A 1916 silent movie featuring Sherlock Holmes - long presumed lost - is due to have its premiere in Paris. It stars a man who changed the way we see Conan Doyle's famous sleuth forever. He was the first great Sherlock Holmes. But few will have heard of US actor William Gillette. Not only was Gillette the Benedict Cumberbatch of his day. He was the actor who decided - perhaps more than any other - how Holmes looks and talks, and whose relationship with Conan Doyle may have breathed new life into the Sherlock Holmes franchise.

A second book containing the lost Sherlock Holmes story ('Sherlock Holmes: Discovering the Border Burghs and, by deduction, the Brig Bazaar') has been discovered in Selkirk, bearing the signature 'Arthur Conan Doyle'. The second book belonged to late Selkirk centenarian Alex Cuthill, who inscribed his name on the inside cover. The mystery deepens.

Steven Moffat has confirmed the setting of the special Sherlock episode. He is quoted, "We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. Mark Gatiss and me wanted to do this, but it had to be special, it had to be a separate entity on its own."
