I am also extremely excited for the Sherlock special. For some time now, I have imagined having Cumberbatch and Freeman doing a period Holmes film, and I didn't think that particular fantasy was ever going to come true but now it would appear that it is.
I am personally a huge fan of the Jeremy Brett series. I wouldn't say that it is dated in any negative sense. The filmmaking style is obviously slower paced and a bit stately by today's standards but I think that is appropriate for a period literary adaptation. The performances are outstanding, and it is certainly the closest we have come to a definitive screen interpretation of the Doyle stories. Brett is possibly my favourite Holmes, although I love Basil Rathbone's interpretation as well.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in the term 'dated', was referring more to the clarity of the picture and that it is viewed in 4:3 format.
But then again you cannot expect to much from a television program that was made in the 1890's

I really thought it would be broadcast on Boxing Day. Really looking forward to it.
Did anyone see the new years day episode and what did you think ?
I loved it, some great comedy moments in it, and a great performance from
the two leads. A very clever episode, leaving the way open for Sherlock to
go back in time again ?

Wonderful, great entertainment, and very clever. The first half was better than the second, if I have to make a criticism. The jokes were excellent, and the cast all looked as if they were having a thoroughly good time. Now the long wait begins until the next one...

It was a bag of ****. Switched off last night as it was so bad, then decided to pick it up again and try anew. Utter ****!! It's gone so far from the brilliant series it started as and now has become a pastiche of crap that blows smoke up it's own bottom. Now I loved Sherlock and own many major props and costumes including two of his iconic coats (which fit me perfectly) and other items which puts my Bond collection to shame. But what it seems the scriptwriters are more interested in showing is how clever they were rather than how clever they can be in rewriting Sherlock for the 21st century, which is why it was originally so well received. Give me more Sherlock solving real crimes, not dream games and wedding speeches. The series is dead in the water unless we get a series where he actually solves some blindingly devious crimes instead of revelling in what a bizaare character he is and scriptwriters trying to show us what a splendid character they created back then.
Totally disagree with what you say, Asp9mm, it was really good. Gatiss & Moffat are spinning things out, true, but there was a crime to solve and it was done well.

What crime? Seriously. He was high on drugs dreaming how to work out how someone who he saw die, didn't. Which he eventually decided, actually did.

+1. If it wouldn't be sacrilege, I'd say I'm more keen to see this than SPEC... no, that would be wrong!
Look a bit dated but still enjoyable
Aren't they supposed to look dated? In the right way.
Peter Cushing as Holmes, as well.
