:)) Citroen just stopped to produce this particular model due to the desasterous sales figures.
Must have been similar to LTK :D

Obviously Connerys endorsement did not help much

I personally don't regard Connery as an over- greedy person.

What really makes me sorry for the man is, that he apparently is not able to cherish and enjoy his success. Like others said, he was an underpaid and hard- working man and suddenly made a worldwide carreer with one particular job.

He earned good cash and I am sure that he had not to worry about about money since then - so why not just sit back and enjoy?

    Roger Bond certainly did and he seems to be the much happier person that way -{

*Additionally he seems to be unable to laugh about himself - just like ol' Roger can.

I agree - it's a shame Connery couldn't lighten up and enjoy the success of his tenure as Bond the way Moore does. I'm sure that has to with a lot more than just money.

It is a thing you see often with actors. Don Johnson doesnt want to talk about Miami Vice. Mark Hamill doesnt wanna talk Star wars. Connery doesnt want to talk Bond.

Why? Because it seems everything else they have done is inferior to their biggest success. And what they are doing today does not matter.

Of course there are exceptions, like Moore. Probably because he didnt do anything good since Bond ;)

    Maybe the opposite is true:

Often their greatest success is larger than the main actors.
Johnson produced only flops after MV and would be an unknown actor ever since if MV did not make him the star.

Moore was a popular and famous actor before Bond came to his life, I doubt that Connery would have even been allowed to act a movie without the franchise.

Of course that's hard to admid
Examples for this are many in showbiz - look at all the boygroups and the individual carreers afterwards. Robbie Williams and Ronan Keating and Mc Cartney are the exceptions and not the rule.

Yep very true. Maybe that is why the extra fear of being typecasted as a one trick pony (Johnson, Connery...) Who knows? Although often you seen when actors get older, they look back and are more proud of their work (Johnson even spoofed his Crockett persona in a LeBron james Nike commercial...)

Adam West of Batman was the same, William Shatner also. Ah well, Connery should be proud of his work of James Bond. In many eyes (incl mine) he is the ultimate Bond and will remain that forever.

Again guys, anybody know anything about GL's autobiog? Amazon UK still have release date as tomorrow, but there's no cover image, or anything. Google searches only turn up results from last year, 2011 and 2010. No info from this year seemingly. I know a autobiography of George might not be a big a draw as one from Sir Rog, but you would think if it was still supposed to be coming out tomorrow we'd have heard something about it?
  • ixtoreixtore NYCPosts: 111MI6 Agent
I didn't even know about the autobiography. Will look into it.
For me, Connery is and always will be 'the one' ---- but I do give Lazenby a pretty good score. He had never acted before, and with that in mind, did a very decent job in the role. He (until Craig -- not sure) was the only Bond with an actual background in martial arts. He was fit, hyper masculine and fit the role well, in my opinion. All the talk about being dubbed for H. Bray aside, he carried his responsibility well. If anyone was around to remember, the mere THOUGHT that any one could replace Connery was considered folly. And, to me, the failure of OHMSS to make big box office was more the producers trying to make up for Connery's absence (long involved plot, extended love story, exceptionally long film for the time ...). It is, in retrospect, a good Bond film - perfect for the time - and certainly better than many that were to come.
Guess I'm saying I liked Lazenby for the part. Look forward to reading his biography.

He did great for having no acting experience whatsoever and had a great athleticism and believability as Bond that would be lost until 1987 with Dalton.

Bond speaking with an Aussie accent is daunting on first viewings of the film. George does deliver a good performance in the film however

I thought Lazenby made Bond very vulnerable, making his
love for Tracy more believable and the ending filled with
impact. Infact I couldn't imagine Connery in that scene.

Laz was forced to do 3 films for Harvest after Lee died as he had already been paid 10k for it.........I'm sure "Game" would've boosted his career , "Enter" was already a huge hit and Game would've prolly been out by spring '74.

His way of thinking makes sence , it was all about rebel films (Easy Rider) in the late 60s........films that flipped the bird to society , free spirit kind of films.
  • HigginsHiggins GermanyPosts: 16,619MI6 Agent
I have to disagree with this.

As far as I know, he was desperate for money and grabbed every occasion to get a paid job.
That's more the reason for his after Lee- films than any specific spiritual direction of a film.

Is there any truth that G Lazenby made a lot of money from
real estate as he bought land in California ?, I remember reading
    it somewhere.

Yeah, read the same somewhere a few times- dunno if its true, though, or even the original rumour taken from the original article and then repeated!

    Amazing guy, the Laz, though.

Aussie country boy makes it to the UK to become, apparently, a huge Euro clothing model star.

Gets James Bond after a shed load of effort and white lies. Convinces the producers and the audience to give him a huge contract (OHMSS is successful, whatever the privailing 70s, 80s, early 90s BS)... and then jacks it in 'cos his no-name driipy hippy 'adviser' reckons in the 70s Bond won't be trendy, man :s (And a long comes everyones favourite 40+ grandad Bond, Rog, makes a shed load, oh the irony)

Cubby and Harry hexe his name, bogs off to Aus/HK, learns martial arts, after some **** films gets together with Bruce Lee who's huge at the time, agree a film deal... and Bruce dies on him!!!!

Meanwhile, appearently, he's made it to the US, married a newspaper "heiress", had two kids, bought aforementioned Californian "land"....

Makes US TV appearances, OHMSS is rehabiliated, and so's good 'ole George

Marriage collapses, son dies of brain tumour, appears at Pinewood as part of the Bond Fan Club 25th anniversary tribute VERY shortly afterwards... and seems as cheerful as ever (I know, I was there).

Picked up by "Spy Guise" as there front man, gonna open a bunch of spy-movie/tv themed restraurants... they go, erm, bust.

Signs autographs, mariies Pam Shriver, back in the headlines, two kids when he's 90... Balls'it up 'cos she reckons he's a violent pisshead (wrong Aussie, Pam: that's Mel Gibson).

Autobiog tied up, probably in litigation.

Gott love 'im. Always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

    My username says it all.

He made for a more human and vulnerable Bond who during the course of his mission could be a killer. I think he showed more range than any other Bond actor - seriously.

The final scene in the movie in the car, cradling his dead wife's body? As they say, "nobody does it better." Still makes me cry, that scene. It was all George.

Lee knew the end was near , why else would he buy life insurance in May , just 2 months before his passing ?

Maybe Laz wanted to do the 25th Pinewood gig cuz he wanted to get over the depression , moving on is better than to stay depressed.

Well, if Bruce arranged life assurance knowing that he had a terminal illness, then he might have committed fraud... Certainly, he would have had a pre-existing condition exclusion... :o ;)

Certainly agree though on Laz's attendance in 1994, the need for life to go on as normally as possible to move on and avoid slipping into ever blacker depression. Indeed, Lazenby's regular ability to continue on through major setbacks has constantly been an inspiration, however often that has been self-inflicted on some occasions.

Lee was only huge in SE Asia region & a little following in US when he died , his world wide fame would come post mortem.

Lee's death was a freak accident so he didn't commit fraud in that sense as to life insurance.......he seemed overworked.

Anyway , back on topic........at least GL could've gotten his own crime show or something , maybe even a sitcom :))

Yes, Cubby & Harry did a brilliant job black-balling Lazenby throughout the mainstream entertainment industry, almost deliberately erasing OHMSS from EON history, perpetuating the myth that it was a poor film and a financial disaster after the box-off lifeline Rog's re-invention of Bond had given them.

Either that, or George really was a lousy person no one needed to work with...

Lee was very well known by the time he died. His stint as Kato in The Green Hornet TV series gave him a great buzz - and by the time Enter the Dragon was released, his name was huge (even though it happened concurrent with his death). His personal relationships with film stars like James Coburn was big time stuff in film magazines. Lee was THE man at the time. The number of Karate classes exploded as Lee's career developed. IIRC. 8-)

George Lazenby wasn't the Best Bond in my opinion but he was a great Bond in the Best Bond Movie that stands alone as its own thing. Great Soundtrack and wonderful performance by Rigg, Savales, & Lazenby..& the guy who dubbed him during the Sir Hillary sequences.

I think george Lazenby is a good bloke , I think he is really honest about his time as james bond and he must have alot of regrets. And at the time sean connery was a big act to follow I think most people would have had a hard time.ive watched interviews of him on YouTube and you can see from these that he must be kicking him self.he was young and nieve but the British public was too and so was sean connery to a certain extent as even he didn't think the bond films would last this long.ohmss is a fantastic film and I think George did a fantastic job ! Its one of the best and George should be proud.

Yeah. I guess it's important to keep the context of the time in mind, to where Bond isn't a franchise yet. Just a series. There were 5 movies, all with Connery. And with Connery out and an unknown dark-horse actor coming in, it was a little bit hard to see it making a huge comeback. The 70's were seen to be a time of change, and peace. But instead of entirely scrapping Bond, as Lazenby thought would happen, Moore changed the role to accomodate the decade better.

Yes, please stop it as you are just saying the same thing over and over with no real point and it's becoming increasingly annoying. If you have something to address then create a new thread. Just creating random posts to boots your post count is pointless as we can all see it happening and it creates a negative opinion which you probably don't deserve.

I apologize for reviving too many Lazenby threads at once. It was a mistake. I wanted Lazenby to get his share of appreciation, but I should have only revived one thread a week or something, rather than 10 in one hour.

It goes without saying that I should probably postpone my "Pros and Cons: OHMSS" thread.

But it angers me to be accused of post-count boosting (~7 posts a day isn't a crime), considering all of the threads on the forum that are filled with three-word posts that aren't criticized, I am being singled out. And I kinda resent that.
