Ranking the Moore films

MustonMuston Huncote, Leicestershire Posts: 228MI6 Agent
I'm sure this has been done before, but after watching TSWLM today I feel like a Moore ranking thread. :007)

1: FYEO
2: OP
3: AVTAK
4: LALD
5: TSWLM
6: TMWTGG
7: MR

Why is AVTAK so high? In truth I have no idea but I love it for some weird reason. ;)

I'm always in the mood for ranking the Moore films...no matter how many times I've already done it.

    1. The Spy Who Loved Me - the ultimate 007 film starring Roger Moore. This one has it all. 10/10
    2. A View to a Kill - Finest performance by Moore. Most serious, most human. Top notch villains. 9.5/10
    3. Moonraker- high budget, huge production values, well-crafted blockbuster. 9.5/10
    4. Octopussy- Non-stop entertainment. Lots of comedy mixed with great action and nail-biting tension. 7.5/10
    5. Live and Let Die- Cool as hell Bond movie battling the forces of voodoo and black magic. 7.5/10
    6. For Your Eyes Only- Solid attempt at being more faithful to Fleming. Somewhat letdown by uneven humor and dated wardrobes and music. 7.5/10
    7. The Man With the Golden Gun- Interesting early incarnation of Moore as 007 showing a more cold and ruthless side. Unfortunate reappearance of JW Pepper and other bumbling sidekicks. Still highly worthwhile. 6.5/10
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

    1. The Spy Who Loved Me - Easily the best movie of the 70'ies and a true milestone in the franchise. Pure Bondian entertainment!
    2. For Your Eyes Only - Follow very closely behind TSWLM. Great plot and it's cool to see a more serious version of Roger Moore's Bond in this one.
    3. Octopussy - Pure entertainment!
    4. The Man with the Golden gun - Guilty pleasure for me!
    5. Moonraker - Yes it's over the top, but come on is this entertaining!
    6. A View To A Kill - Used to like it a lot more as a kid. Now it sometimes feels as a very tired Bond movie that doesn't really deliver anything new. (Christopher Walken is a great plus though!)
    7. Live and Let Die - Not a particulairy bad movie, just never really grew fond of it as much...

We'll at least you recognize that the love for AVTAK is weird! :)) Now for my ranking:

    1. FYEO
    2. OP
    3. LALD
    4. TSWLM
    5. TMWTGG
    6. MR
    7. AVTAK

My ranking may have changed over time, but it has always been FYEO at the top and AVTAK at the bottom. Those are the easy picks for me.

1 - LALD - Great nostalgia, cool feel, love the voodoo stuff, great girl. 10/10
2 - AVTAK - The best villain, great locations, great action sequences. 10/10
3 - OP - Memorable, fun, and a truly awesome scene in the clown defusing the bomb. 10/10
4 - FYEO - Great action, decent girl, entertaining sequences. 10/10
5 - TSWLM - Immense PTS, great locations, great sets. 9/10
6 - TMWTGG - Excellent villain, beautiful locations. Slightly slow in places. 8/10
7 - MR - Too much with Jaws and Space. But an excellent centrifugal scene. 6/10
    1 - LALD, 2 - AVTAK, 3 - LTK, 4 - OP, 5 - NTTD, 6 - FYEO, 7 - SF, 8 - DN, 9 - DAF, 10 - TSWLM, 11 - OHMSS, 12 - TMWTGG, 13 - GE, 14 - MR, 15 - TLD, 16 - YOLT, 17 - GF, 18 - DAD, 19 - TWINE, 20 - SP, 21 - TND, 22 - FRWL, 23 - TB, 24 - CR, 25 - QOS

    1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby

1: LALD My new RM favorite
2: TSWLM Has been my favorite RM Bond since childhood but lately slipped a place
3: FYEO Best 80s RM Bond by a very wide margin
    4: OP
    5: TMWTGG
    6: AVTAK
    7: MR

The last four I try to avoid on a regular basis. Haven't seen OP or AVTAK in over ten years. And I'm not missing the experience. Have seen parts of MR and TMWTGG lately and still don't like them. RM is one of the nicest persons around in the movie business but the majority of his Bond movies are crap, as far as I'm concerned.

This is very hard for me, but I will try my best as I am a huge Moore fan. :)
I might as well count them down from 7-1.

    7. Moonraker-
I do agree that this film gets a lot of hate but I actually prefer it to Goldfinger! It has a 'epic' feel to it and I love Roger Moore's one-liners throughout the film from "Did I?" to "Heartbroken, Mr Drax...take a giant leap for Mankind." As a child, my favourite scene was the Gondola chase at St Mark's square. I didn't think twice about the silliness of the double-looking pigeon or any of it. I feel that this is how I should approach the film. Yes, it's silly and stupid, yes Jaws should of died with Stromberg but great entertainment as it is.
    6.5/10

    6. The man with the golden gun-
The pacing and a few annoying characters hold this film back for me. The villain is spectacular but I feel should of been shown a little more then he was, Christopher Lee did a marvellous job though. Nick Nack irritates me and there could have been a bit more action in places. But Roger Moore is superb and still looks fresh-faced and young. The one-liners are funny as ever and it's nice to see Moore's dark and ruthless side in this film, something I feel slips in the later movies a little. Something compels me not to rate it the seven, it doesn't to be in the 7's.
    6.9/10

    5. A view to a kill
Don't kill me Jarvio. I do enjoy this film, honest. It has a great feel to the film, very 80's. Love Walken and even though Mayday gives me the creeps, (why on earth did you bed her Bond is she even counted as a woman!) she is an interesting and worthwhile character. I like to think this as Bond's last assignment in the Moore universe with him retiring after this. Love the Eiffel tower scene and Tibbit. It is weird, but I feel that's what keeps it from being a normal Bond film with a very old looking Moore in the role. A slice of the eighties preserved, deserving that 7 mark.
    7.6/10

    4. The Spy who loved me-
Wait this low? Yes, I love this film, it isn't Moore's best but it is quite a bit better then number 5's AVTAK. The main reason I adore this movie is how Moore has felt his stride, just like Craig in SF, he knows where he stands. I salute Cubby's decision to go over the top because that is what makes this film work so well. A little corny, has a few cheesy moments which do find their ways into the Moore films. Bach is hot :x, though just a tiny bit wooden. Though the action set pieces of perfect. Earning the first 8 of the Moore movies.
    8.6/10

    3. Live and Let Die-
I love the feel of this movie, I love it how it makes Bond insecure, by himself reminds me a lot like Connery in From Russia With love. Moore is superb, you instantly accept that this guy is Bond, straight away. The film does very well in pushing Bond into the 70's, because this movie has a very different feel to Dr No or a Connery film. The use of gadgets are done well and J.W Pepper doesn't bother me, he brings some nice light-relief to the movie. The Voodoo themes are handeled nicelly, without being over the top or leaving it in the foreground. Both Solitare and Rosie Carver are good characters, Solitare being hot!!! The numerous villains keep you entertained. Rating judged on pure entertainment.
    8.9/10

    2. Octopussy-

Yes the whole two villian ploy fails in this movie as much as it does in The living daylights. Yes, the plot is a little confusing and Yes Moore looks old but man this film is awesome. The pre-title is done well, the adventure side is great and the score is my favourite of the Moore era. The whole train sequence is done well, I can understand why they repeated this in SF and the whole tension is done well, most nerve-racking scenes in any Old Bond film! Adore it, not much else to say really.
    9.4/10

    1.For your eyes only-
My favourite Bond movie and one of my favourite films of all time. Yes, moore is awesome in this, Melina havelock is smoking hot, I mean come on John Glen, move the camera up a little bit when she drops that dressing gown at the end!! The characters are cool, the score is funky, the whole Columbo/ Kristatos story works extremely well and the film isn't campy but doesn't take itself too seriously like License to Kill does a little. The action is done well and the climax stays with the rest of the film.
    9.7/10

Not at all Blackleiter, I love them both. I read Fleming novels, and enjoy them a lot. I also enjoy Daltons portrayal as Bond and wish he stayed on for more. I like to watch both types of movies. I love Moore, but I do feel that it got a little too campy . I prefer MR to Goldfinger because I find more enjoyment in it. Goldfinger is a good film but I feel like the villain is overhyped and turns out to be pathetic, Pussy Galore just seems ugly to me, not hot and whose attraction to Bond feels unrealistic. Also the film slows down to being boring and Bond seems to really suck in this movie! He just feels like a fool, not really knowing what he's doing. But we all entitled to our opinions, the film isn't awful just overrated. I do feel compelled to start a Connery thread of this...

interesting list Suzuki. I also prefer Moonraker to Goldfinger. :)

I honestly have a really tough time ranking the Moore films, particularly between LALD, FYEO, OP. It's like a 3-way tie at the moment.

I am certain Spy Who Loved me is my #1.

A View to a Kill and Moonraker are both battling for the coveted #2 spot in my heart.

TMWTGG is holding at #7 but potential to rise up the ranks.
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

I guess I really shouldn't be surprised because opinions are all over the place with respect to virtualy every Bond film. And I'm sure we can all agree that no one's opinion is more valid than anyone else's. I'm still a little puzzled, though. You say you love both movies and that you feel Goldfinger is a "good" film, but then you point out several significant negatives of the movie, including a "pathetic"villain and the fact "Bond seems to really suck in this movie". Based on that description, I sure wouldn't get the impression that you think Goldfinger is a good Bond film! (Forgive me if I seem a bit nitpicky about this, but Goldfinger is my personal favorite and I'm feeling protective. :007) )

I think in this conversation I need to address what things I love about Goldfinger
-I love the Aston Martin DB5, defiently the best Bond car in the whole series and the chase which goes with it is awesome.
-The pre-title sequence is on my top five list for sure! It is really well done and has a nice simplicity to it.
-The title song sung by Shirley Bassey and the title sequence which goes with it are astoundingly good.
-The Q scene is the best in the whole series.
-The laser scene is tense and has splendid acting in it (and you get to see some menace in Auric)
-The score has Barry at his best and I love the version of the Bond theme, Bond back in action again which plays at the start.
-I also like the improvement they made of the novel with Auric not stealing it but blowing it up.
-The golf game scene is well done and a vast improvement of the scene in the novel as well.
-Oddjob is awesome. Love his silent portayal and he's seems very intelligent as well. His fight scene with Bond is a winner!
There you go, there's stuff that I like in it. Maybe the stuff I was saying was a bit too broad but I feel like there are better movies then it.

Moore's films are the hardest to rank because they're such a diverse set of movies.

I'm sure on my #1 pick and my #7 pick, but the rest is subject to change.

1 - The Spy Who Loved Me
The perfect Moore film combining all of his positive attributes into one work.

    2 - Octopussy
Lots of great humor here along with creative action sequences.

3 - For Your Eyes Only
A serious believable immersive spy film, but not the most innovative.

    4 - A View to a Kill
Everything I love and hate about the Moore era.

5 - Man with the Golden Gun
A weak script, but an overall quite unique and entertaining.

6 - Live and Let Die
I enjoyed it, but it feels like a standard Bond with a voodoo paint job.

    7 - Moonraker
Pretty boring for a movie about space.
