My favorite part of DAF (and by that I mean the only one I liked) was the elevator fight. You know the one I'm talking about. The one in Amsterdam, with Peter Franks and Bond duking it out in a rickety-looking elevator. I actually really enjoyed the fight. And then it went downhill from there...

It appears the producers intended DAF to be a GOLDFINGER for the '70s, but with the shift of time & cinematic tastes & styles it was inevitable the tone would be different. 1971 is quite simply a brasher period than 1964 & this is reflected in the writing & direction. If you watch it as a parody of the series it's quite entertaining. View it as a serious addition to the franchise & it's a crushing disappointment. I quite like Connery's performance; he's obviously poking fun at his '60s personna, ably assisted by Guy Hamilton & Tom Mankiewicz. They all seem to be having a whale of a time sending up Bond conventions. For me, Connery's presence prevents it from lurching into a completely loopy universe, but it's easy to see how the Moore era would blossom out of this film. The last third is utterly lazy though. It feels as if nobody really knows how to wrap things up & all concerned have suddenly realised the plot is virtually non-existent. But I can forgive all that for the dialogue alone; easily some of the funniest of the series.
For me, Connery's presence prevents it from lurching into a completely loopy universe, but it's easy to see how the Moore era would blossom out of this film.
I'll have to admit that DAF laid the groundwork for the Moore era, comical Bond films. But I agree that Connery keeps DAF from going completely overboard because he still provides a few moments of the formidable, dangerous Bond persona (e.g. the elevator fight and the moment when he elbows the mobster who tosses Plenty out of the window into the pool).
It's so cheesy and overdone, it seems like it was intentional. At least to me. Winn and Kidd especially are just so stupidly portrayed, but I found it hilarious. Maybe because I thought the actual novel by Fleming seemed like kind of a half-baked effort on his part.

Just look at it as Sean Connery not giving a s*** to the point where it's practically satirical, where as with YOLT he just looks kind of pissed off for a lot of it and is doing a shitty job to spite Harry Saltzman.
