Recently watched Dr No and something has occurred to me, regarding No, himself.

Why does he speak with a RP accent, if he's supposed to be Chinese/German? When he's describing his journey to becoming involved with SPECTRE, he doesn't mention spending time in England, so the accent is confusing.

Joseph Wiseman is Canadian, but he was a Shakespearian actor and he would've had training to lose his Canadian accent. But it doesn't explain his accent in the film.

Why do so many of the characters in the Bond films have accents that don't quite fit the characters? No is a refined person who speaks English, so RP isn't completely out of place. The way he speaks doesn't sound exactly like a British prince either. I'd say he sounds more mid-Atlantic. It's the kind of accent that is easy to understand and sounds refined, but it can't be placed anywhere. Nikki van der Zyl and Robert Rietty had that similar kind of thing where the accents that they used could never really be placed. It's an old-fashioned thing about acting. My orchestra teacher in school had one of those fake accents so she wouldn't sound like she was from New York City.

Just watched FYEO on blu-ray. Not one of my favorites, but certainly has some great parts.

    Little niggles:

    1. Guy in pink jacket seated behind Kristatos looks exactly like Colombo. Is it??

    2. Why bother to show Gogol having an office romance?

    3. Motorcyclist crashing thru a window while wearing a helmet would probably not die.

    4. Did we really need a big fat Greek wedding scene before an equally pointless meeting with Q?

    5. Russians will send a helicopter, but Bond has to climb it!? Maybe he could have asked Q for a jetpack.

    6. Bibi says "Hurry up or I'll leave without you." Brink replies, "I will never leave you."
Brink's reply makes no sense. Bibi was obviously not concerned about being abandonded.

    7. How did Colombo's warehouse raid prove anything to Bond prior to the first shots being fired?

    8. Bond's last carabiner coming loose looks a bit dodgy like a stop-motion technique.
    My current 10 favorite:

    4. Yes, Michael G. Wilson has to fit his cameo in somewhere!

    5. Bond had to be stealthy, the Russians didn't.

This is not a serious response, only a bit of fun. ;) {[]

1, Never noticed, will have to give it another look, but statistically we all have at
Least 7 doppelgangers, so it is possible.
2, a bit of character development perhaps ?
3, maybe he was allergic to flowers ? Also perhaps having large sharp pieces of
Glass pushed through his body didn't do him any good ?
( Bond films just can't show all the carnage he does ) ;)
4, the "Bless me father" line always got a big laugh, at any screening I went to, and
Bond is a mix of action/ humour :) have to let the audience relax now and then, it
Was also originally supposed to be a meeting with M ;)
5 , Agree Bond was trying for a surprise attack, It's even mentioned in the film.
6, I think this shows that she thinks of Bibi as a daughter, and is not working for
Kristatos. Or it can fuel a bit of girl on girl fantasy. :D
7, I guess Columbo was taking Bond there to show the drug smuggling etc was
Really kristatos's bag, not his ?
8, I've never noticed will keep an eye out for it next time.

Isn't Colombo supposed to be in the restaurant? If memory serves me right in the book Colombo is in the restaurant and makes a big scene with his girlfriend, there is also that special chair with the recording device is there nt? Must confess I haven't seen the film for a while, might just pop it on this Sunday.
It was either that.....or the priesthood
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
Yes, that part of the film is very close to the Fleming story "Risico". With the hidden Recording device and
Having Kristatos get Bond to do his Dirty work by killing Columbo.

... also cut back on the recreational drugs ;) :D

My very minor little niggle with FYEO, are the machine guns fitted into the
Indicators of the Motorbikes. As I keep wondering how they get the bullets
Fed into them, and where on the bike they keep those bullets ! :)) A silly
Niggle, I agree ( it is a action movie) guns in a car, I can believe, there's plenty
Of room, but a bike is so exposed, almost a machine skeleton, but I guess it was
Simply an easy way to put Bond in even more peril.

:)) you're right my ibuprofen and caffeine habits are getting out of hand!
I've always thought that too, the Indicators are just hollow tubes Zbigniew it also struck me how inaccurate they would be and the calibre is huge!!!

Sorry for the confusion. I mean when Bond first meets Kristatos by the ice rink. There is a guy in a pink jacket who looks just like Colombo.

    1. Never noticed, will have to have a look next time!
    2. Are Russians not allowed to have sex?
    3. Broke his neck, perhaps?
    4. Absolutely! Good to see a bit of culture in the Bond films. It's what differentiates them from other spy films.
    5. As others pointed out, it's a stealth mission. A chopper/jetpack/etc. would have been to noisy.
    6. As another poster pointed out (Thunderpussy?), it's to highlight that Brink isn't aligned with Kristatos.
    7. Demonstrates that Locque is working for Kristatos, and not Columbo. The subsequent attack solidifies this.
    8. Yeah. I like to think of it as sudden, jerky movements, but it's a dodgy effect. :p

    5. As others pointed out, it's a stealth mission. A chopper/jetpack/etc. would have been to noisy.

In that case Bond and Q should have taken their trusty union jack hot air balloon. :)

The stealth advantage didn't last long anyway. It could have been a full on assault. Especially considering how badly the British wanted the ATAC back. Including the Greek Police, everyone should have come down on that monastery like a load of bricks.

    I watched Tomorrow Never Dies last night on Blu-ray for the first time. -{

I know I had some little niggles at some point, but I honestly can't think of any now. TND is basically a perfect Bond film.

Okay…here's a minor one: The camera cuts away from Elliot as he's saying one of his best lines, "Besides we're on a STEALTH boat."

I doubt the Greek Police could be trusted for something like this.

I like to think that this was to show how different M and Gogol are. M is strictly professional and Gogol likes to mix business with pleasure.

I am loving the love for Tomorrow Never Dies! It's brilliant and still holds up, almost 20 years later. Best modern James Bond film, IMO. :x

Excellent point. I love how the difference between Gogol and the British government (there's no M in FYEO to compare Gogol to) is shown. These little moments of character development make the films more special.

That reminds me….I thought the tribute reference to Bernard Lee could have been better.

Anyway, I liked seeing a glimpse into Gogol's personal life when he is called at home in MR and has a lady in bed. However, I don't find a workplace romance believable. Especially since the Soviets seem more strict in general. Like in TSWLM, Anya's relationship had not "escaped their notice." To me that implies they were at least trying to be very discreet.

However, in Christopher Wood's TSWLM novel General Gogol is a creepy, molester type of a figure. I am glad EoN decided to make him more likable as he's one of my favorite staples of the RM era.

One tiny niggle I have with TND:

Bond takes the GPS device from Carver's safe and it's a whacking great big red box. He slips into his inside jacket pocket. He then basically fights a small army, escapes and gets into his car and takes the device out of his pocket - all while looking immaculate.

Now I only have to put a handful of change and a pen in my suit pocket and it looks awful - if only I had Brozz's tailor.... :))

How about even believing he kept a P99 in there? Not in TND, of course, but in the subsequent films. I've noticed a bulge in the occasional shots when the gun is actually in there.

Yeah i know what you mean its a good job they are only films ,i dont tend to look that deep or it would probably spoil the film for me compair it to a car changing in to a submarine obviously impossible but i loved it. I suppose there has to be some silly things put in to bond films so they can catch the next batch of 10 year olds.

If I remember correctly, the encoder comes in two pieces; the outer box, which like you say is a big box that wouldn't fit in his pocket, and the encoder itself, which is a bit smaller. It'd still hurt like hell when he jumped onto the little trolley and the encoder got pressed into his ribs though, or when he rolls under the shutter.
