the Aston gets an origin story in this version, and its more interesting than Daniel Craig walking into a showroom and haggling with the dealer.
My niggle: the Aston never was supposed to be Bond's car. The Aston was lent to him by Q so he could track Goldfinger across the Alps. It's government property, do bring it back in one piece this time 007 etc.
Bond's car was a Bentley, but it's never been seen onscreen except in two unofficial films.

-Okay, please explain why does Bond order room service for one? He's leaving for the Miami airport, so why would the girl stick around his hotel room and drink champagne alone?
more Craig Bond-itood? (i.e. his Bond has an attitude). I don't know, this doesn't make sense to me either except to show off his attitude
    Firemass wrote:
-Bond calls an assistant in London and instructs him to call M to call the Police? Why not just dial 911 directly.
This ones easy, he wants official channels from the very top to take control immediately, instead of any silly local authorities getting there first and claiming jurisdiction. He doesn't want another Sheriff Pepper situation. And whereas Roger could just say "I'm British Intelligence" and everybody'd respect that, they'd all just think Craig was a lying thug, and he's got too much attitude than to waste time winning peoples respect anyway.
    Firemass wrote:
-Why would "they" have any reason to torture and kill Dimitrios' wife? As far as I can figure the only person she was in danger of was Dimitrios himself and Bond took care of him personally. I hate to see a fine-ass become a casualty.
they assume she might have talked? considering the sequence of events they were right and must now also demonstrate how they deal with traitors
    Firemass wrote:
    -What's with the Moneypenny reference?
very forced, unnatural dialog, I agree, unnecessary fourth wall breaking, does not make sense within the story and only has any meaning to us in the audience who remember the old films.
    Firemass wrote:
-After dinner on the train, Vesper wanders off. Then in the very next scene they are together again getting into a car. Where did she go inbetween?
you're overniggling. She obviously has her own berth, and they meet up again the next morning.
    Firemass wrote:
-What's the point of Bond using the alias Beech in this film? Everyone from the hotel receptionist to the main villain is aware that he is using both names.
some hangover from Fleming? in the book Bond has a fake name he never gets to use because his cover was blown in the very first chapter. But I agree, why even mention it in the film at all? except as a setup for the "Stephanie Broadchest" joke, however that went, which in itself serves to demonstrate these new Bond films will not be doing silly names for women and yet are self-aware enough to acknowledge the expectation
    Firemass wrote:
-I'm confused about who's side Mathis is actually on. Please pick one or the other. He still tries to be Bond's friend after betraying him.
I think he was always a goodguy, and Le Chiffre lied to Bond to deflect suspicion from Vesper. So the fact Bond has him arrested (then whatever else Mathis is subjected to between films) is one of the films morally ambiguous tragedies. This new type of Bond film is meant to be a lot messier than the old good-vs-evil comic book style stories.
    Firemass wrote:
-Vesper is suddenly in tears and saying how Bond is more of a man etc just because he choose her name for the password???
I think she means that he repeatedly saved her life then survived the torture she set him up for. She actually like him, and feels guilt for what she has done. And she knows he got his testicles tortured. In the book he worries he will never be able to perform again (i.e. with a lady), his sense of manhood is literally endangered.
Now Craig's Bond I don't think wastes time doubting his manhood. He's got so much attitude he knows what he can do with his little pinky even if he were permanently castrated. But Vesper is horrified by the consequence of her actions and is polite enough to flatter his masculinity during this trying time.
    Firemass wrote:
-Why didn't Bond transfer the money to the treasury like ASAP? He acted surprised when M called, but how long had he been sitting on it up until that point?
that one's easy, Vesper is "the money", care in the use of government finances is her job, Bond's is just to win that card game. Bond is surprised to learn Vesper didn't do that rather important aspect of her job, and that's the clue she may have been the traitor all along, not Mathis. Remember M doesn't trust Bond, thinks he's an out-of-control thug, and reluctantly assigns him this mission because he happens to be their best card player. So she sends a second, more responsible agent who is in charge of the huge amount of money.
Might have been easier just to hire that writer Evelyn Tremble as a temporary contractor and let him use the codename.

-Whole new set of bad guys including eye patch in final 5 minutes. And man, they sure have some serious firepower for what was supposed to be a simple errand of Vesper transferring money to a bank account. They're just walking around Venice with silenced machine guns and nail guns?
I kind of like this, it seems as though as soon he realises the truth about Vesper that revelation opens up a much wider conspiracy, and we just catch a glimpse of it before the film is over. Too bad the next film didn't successfully follow through with this, although it tried.

    you're overniggling.

    :))

    I completely agree. :))

I watched Quantum of Solace last night as promised.

-Why would Greene go thru all the trouble of hiring a 3rd party hitman to get rid of his girlfriend? Why not just have one of his own henchmen do it? Maybe give Elvis something to do for a change. Greene obviously had no issues with getting rid of the Geologist on right there on his own property.

-When Bond interrupts the secret meeting, I'm kinda surprised they would all get up out of their seats and leave. It obviously draws attention to themselves. Let the authorities know to wait in the lobby because all the bad guys will be leaving the theatre now.

-Bond gets in big trouble for knocking that "Special Branch" guy off the roof. In his defense, he did ask who he worked for twice!

    - Greene's environmental speech was actually pretty weak, yet he gets glowing praise for it from the investors. Compare this with a much better demonstration speech from Graves in DAD.

    - Mathis still being alive in the back of a Range Rover could have murmured for help. Ironic that in CR, Mathis framed someone for having a body in the trunk.

    - Aboard the DC-3, Camille says, "Just for the record I wasnt with Green for my..." but never gets to finish. What was she going to say?

    - Odd dialog when Bond returns to the hotel and the clerk says, "Your wife left this for you. The english woman."
I'm assuming that Fields left that note for Bond? However, I'm trying to think how that was possible if she was dead.
Especially if she was telling Bond to run from MI6?

M's lecture of "Why her Bond? she worked in an office." Yeah, well YOU sent her out in the field to bring back a rogue 00 agent. I know I've griped about this one before but it always gets me.

Another strange line from Felix. "I Eat the Peppers."

Gunbarrell at the end is so jarring I about fell out of my seat.

I can't denigglify any of your Quantum of Solace questions. I haven't seen that film in a few years and never gave it a fraction of the thought I did its predescessor
but you just watched it, Mathis is back and they discuss what happened in the first film, does he clarify whether or not he was working with the Enemy?

I think the fact we can ask so many questions of Casino Royale and most of them turn out to have a logical answer demonstrate how well-constructed it is, regardless of a few clumsy lines of dialog.
I remember when it came out being confused by the ambiguous plot and the open ending, and us all regrouping on this very site and working through some of the exact same questions Firemass raised. Then going back for a second viewing and so much made sense that I did not even notice on first viewing, especially with Vesper. For example Vesper entering from the wrong side of the room.

Compare with the World Is Not Enough: once I got to the end and found out who the real villain was, that did not make any of Elektra's actions through the film any more logical upon second viewing. The assault on the ski-slope makes even less sense once we know who the real bad guy is. That ski-slope scene is one of my little niggles I wish someone could sensibly explain.

Now that is a mystery. Plus, Bond's idea to tag along skiing was a last second impulse decision. Renard had already rented the Parahawks and planned this massive full scale assault...against Elektra? Obviously that would make no sense.

I think this is what Hitchcock referred to as a "fridge moment"- it seems okay while you're watching the film, then once you're home and hungry and raiding the fridge, you suddenly say "Wait a moment, that doesn't make sense!". (There's one in Vertigo, for example, when Jimmy Stewart follows Kim Novak to a hotel from which she disappears.)

Yeah, seriously where did she go??

I remember hearing one of the Bond producers, maybe Cubby, saying they try to keep the action coming at such a brisk pace that the audience doesn't have time to say, "Hey wait a second that doesn't make sense."

I presume the reason there have been fictional locations are because the story doesn't work otherwise - Kananga is a leader of a country, so you can't put him in an existing country. Sanchez also essentially runs Isthmus, and the President is involved, so again, can't really put it in an existing country unless you're changing real world events.

Watched DAF last night on Hulu.

    - Other than creating some decoys, the Blofeld clones really serve no purpose. Blofeld makes it sound so urgent in the PTS.

    - The moon buggy! This vehicle is just so random. Bond stumbles upon a fake moon landing set which has nothing to do with the events in the film. Next thing you know he is driving a moon buggy.

-Plenty's death. Even with the deleted scene it barely makes sense. However, what really bothers me is the fact that she died. Having her thrown out of the window into the pool was enough for that poor girl. That was a death too far.

    - Why does Tiffany follow Blofeld in the Casino? It's implied she was after his cat, but why would that matter?

    - Is there any particular reason Blofeld is dressed in drag? Was he trying to bait Tiffany? Again, total mystery to me.

    - It's unfortunate about the above scene, because otherwise Charles Gray was an excellent Blofeld. My favorite in the series actually. His lines about Kansas and Bond's little island are hilarious.

    - WW is being held hostage, yet allowed to keep his own bodyguards right outside? He mentioned Bambi and Thumper were his friends.

-Bond is too "busy" playing with Blofeld's submarine to help Tiffany with an onslaught of bad guys.

especially since she is dropped alive into one pool, then fished out dead from another pool in a completely different part of town. They could have just left all her scenes on the cutting room floor, and the film would make more sense, but the cleavage and witty banter was too important to lose. As opposed to logical plotting.

I think the second half of the film is an unofficial adaptation of Moonraker. Willard Whyte is the popular respectable gazillionaire contributing patriotically to the country's space program, but nobody really suspects the man they think is Whyte is secretly the enemy of the country believed dead since the first scene. That's pretty much Flemings plot, except here they are two different people.
Eventually Blofeld will launch Whyte's satellite supplemented with space laser, but first we get an extended sequence at Whyte's research facility where he is developing his space program technology. So the important part is we see the diamonds delivered to where they're building the satellite, but we then get this high-concept chase scene to pad the film, similar to the chase scenes in the middle of the next two Guy Hamilton films. And it is pretty stupid and random and irrelevant. Maybe in 1971, when moon-landings were still a thing, this was more exciting to see?
I think there was a toy moon-buggy available at the time, with the official 007 logo.

EDIT: here's two different packagings for the toy moonbuggy. The two toys look to be different, too, so maybe ones vintage and ones a more recent collectible? I don't know which was the original

Why is Bond being polite with Blofeld? He was responsible for the death of Bond's wife!

Blofeld told Bond (who was impersonating Bert Saxby) to kill Willard Whyte. Why is the real Bert Saxby there to kill Whyte?

Bond knocks people out too easily! He grabs tbe crane operator and throws him out. The crane operator is out for the count!

I still like it because it has such a classic line up of Sean, Guy Hamilton, Shirley Bassey, Ken Adams etc....They sure don't make 'em like that anymore.

Kind of reminds me of like when a great band puts out a weaker album during their prime. It might not hold up compared to their first four albums, but it's close to that same era of greatness.

The airplane chase in Spectre, what the hell was Bond trying to do that entire scene? First he shoots at the vehicle that Madeline is in. Then he flies through some trees and naturally loses both wings of his airplane while ramming the vehicle where Madeline is in the back seat. He then loses control of his now wingless plane and has no choice but to torpedo it through a luckily vacant shack surrounded by houses and hopefully not collide with the vehicle that Madeline is in. No wonder she's so pissed when Bond goes up to her afterwards, he nearly killed her multiple times!

Getting back to Miss Anders.... so first she resists telling Bond any info to the point where he almost breaks her arm.

Bond is right where she wants him, so what should her next move be? Telling Bond that Scaramanga will be at the Bottoms Up Club was maybe not the best idea. Scaramanga never actually set foot in the club, and it revealed to Bond that he was not the target. So what was Maud hoping to achieve here? I would like to think she had a master plan.

Then later Miss Anders bribes her way into Bond's hotel room. (Why not try knocking on the door?) and suddenly reveals all to Bond.
If this was her plan to simply tell him the truth, why not have just done that in the first place instead of getting slapped around by Bond.

Does she think Bond is like a free-lance assassin? As Roger tells Maud later in Octopussy "I'm not for hire."

Bond seems to agree to kill Scaramanga IF he gets the solex first. That's not exactly killing under specific orders from his government.

    other little niggles:

-Bond would take a random passenger on a high speed car chase.

-The landing of the spiral jump is barely shown and then cuts to JW being tossed around. Bond seems barely fazed by it.

-Why would Scaramanga "abandon" his car-plane?

-I'm no gun expert, but using the ppk as a hammer doesn't seem like a good idea.

-Many have pointed out that M would not have Scaramanga's personal phone number. I'm more mystified why M wants to talk to Goodnight instead of Bond, unless to fire her. :)) and how does M already know any details to congratulate Bond?

-The lyrics of the credits song make it seem like Bond is the man with the golden gun.
"Never fear, James Bond is here. Love is required whenever he's hired..."

Bonus: Not a niggle, but I noticed a possible OHMSS reference where Bond says "It was an inspiration etc" and then it shows Anders robe falling to the floor like the kilt.

You're quite right, Andrea's first scene with Bond makes even less sense than the question of why she's sent him to the Bottoms Up Club.
Almost as of the writers hadn't yet decided she was the one who sent the bullet by the time they filmed this scene.
Maybe she just assumed he was going to be a posh charming gentleman, and was surprised to find him acting like such a jerk? Cornering her while she was in the shower was probably not the best first impression he could have made.

re- Any presumed deal to get the Solex, I'm sure he would have said whatever worked and been bound by no obligation ... though leaving her to face Scaramanga's wrath alone would be even more jerk-ish than hanging round leering while she takes a shower.

Without rewatching the movie to get the exact dialog, I now think she would not have wanted Bond to actually see her deliver the bullets, since that was done on the yacht... maybe because she lives there she felt it was not safe to invite Bond directly to her home? Especially after seeing the way he behaves in her hotel room ... whatever happens when Bond and Scaramanga meet, she wants to be somewhere else ... so she tells Bond the next place she knows Scaramanga will be that is not somewhere she has to live? That being the Bottoms Up Club

It'd be cool if Roger Bond's alter-ego became Scaramanga, continuing his assassinations long after he'd passed away.
Would be cool for a fanfic, with Roger Bond going essentially after himself and framing another villain.

    Ever seen this film, DP?

Hoped someone would pick up on that reference.

Also, Diamonds Are Forever, when Bond shoots one of the Blofelds, where did he find a piton for his rappel gun?
He had already shot both his pitons when he mountaineered about outside the Whyte House and we have established that he threw the one he used to propel himself upwards to the roof down below, so where did he find it?
Is it a snub-nosed revolver and I'm misremembering or am I missing something here?

Dirty Punker the Brocolli kids really need to hire you as their script editor. I'm sure you would have let them know their clever new same plot twist had already been used in a film by Mike Meyers!

Actually, I think I'd end up losing my mind and going on a firing spree with the number of questionable choices everybody in the production would be making and start it from scratch, if only I had the jurisdiction to.
I'd also eventually have to hire half this forum for many parts of the production.

About the Diamonds niggle, put it on the official pros-cons of DAF.
