I accept that people find flaws in the movie and also think that Roger looks very old, but there are many gems there:
The Duran Duran song, the ski chase (minus the beach boy tune), the french castle, the Tibbett-Bond banter, Zorin as a villain, Barry's score, San Francisco as a location, the brigde fight and so on..

Are we judging these on overall quality of the film or just Roger's performance as Bond?
Guy Hamilton Phase- A little unsure of himself, trying hard to not be Sean Connery. Rather unlikable fellow in a few scenes...tricking Solitare, pushing the Thai boy off the boat, slapping Maud around.
Lewis Gilbert Phase - Roger Moore IS Bond. Cool, suave, sophisticated. Roger looked his best in these 2 films.
John Glen Phase- Delivers his best, most compelling 007 in the 80's. A seasoned professional, but also showing his age.
I think this pretty much nails it! I would also say that in the first phase Bond the character finds him self in situations where he is very much out of place. In LALD he is the white guy in a blaxploitation movie! He doesn't just fit in - "It's like following a cue ball." In TMWTGG Bond thinks HE is the one being targeted, which makes the character sort of the victim. I wonder if the unease we see it Moore learning the role or his take of the character being in these unusual situations?
Also in TMWTGG, I never understand the criticism of Bond pushing the kid of the boat. I understand Sir Rog regretting it now because the water was filthy. But in the film.. Bond is being chased the kid adjusts the petcock and bond pushes him out of the boat. Is Bond a cad? Or did Bond just push the kid out of harms way? I always assumed it was the later.

I have always interpreted that scene as Bond pushing the kid out of harms way. I can perfectly understand Roger's discomfort with it given his long association with UNICEF.
