THE Bond Movie that blew you away in the theatre as a kid-?

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,062MI6 Agent
I was lucky enough to have seen most all of the early Bonds in the theatre, many in return engagements though. ALL of them thrilled me, and even DAF was amazing to my young eyes, but no single flick ever made more of an impression on me theatrically than YOLT. Everything was HUGE!!! The sweeping music carried me through the amazing photography, fantastic sets & grand action.
Sure, now I can see the comic book take on it all, but as a kid I was rocked beyond reason.

Anecdotes?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

For me, Goldfinger was #2 back then, it was a smaller movie than YOLT, but it had a big a*s LASER!!! Not as big as the one in DAF, but more realistic-looking. :D

True, YOLT is wonderful- but I had read the TB novel shortly before seeing the film and I was completely entranced by Luciana Paluzzi, the spectacular photography, the witty lines, Luciana Paluzzi, Sean Connery's sheer presence and charisma, Luciana Paluzzi, and above all the magnificence that is John Barry whose contribution to this and the other Bond films cannot be over-estimated. Oh, and Luciana Paluzzi. :x

    Goldeneye.
If I had been a kid when GE came out, I'd agree with you completely Chris, alas, I was into my 30's at that point. 8-)

Yes, she is to women what lasers are to gadgets, and she surely stirred my young hormones up some (understatement), but even as a normal 12-13 year old, explosions got my attention before all else! :D

My 'kid' memory is that GF had way stronger characterization, but YOLT had CRAZY action & production value. Hmmm... my 'kid' memory is pretty accurate. :)) My 'kid' memory also says that DAF was cooler than both.
So much for my kid-memory-accuracy. :))

The scent smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - a compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.

    Tomorrow Never Dies.

I didn't get to see GoldenEye in theaters, but I saw it on VHS rental and then went to opening of TND. It was awe inspiring when I watched it. Now it is firmly in the middle of my Bond rankings, but still holds a special place.

I see that from your Bond rankings :)

GoldenEye is probably in my top 5. TND is a solid one that I can watch over and over again. Part of it is because of the memory of seeing it in the theaters, the other part is that is is just a great standard Bond flick that has all the classic elements of a Bond film and does it right.

There had never been anything like it, other than Dr. No and FRWL. And Goldfinger, everything about it, pushed the envelope. Stylish, brutal (for the time), wickedly humorous, fantastic and it had a great villain. It was just awesome.
I understand that Bond likes and dislikes are, in part, generational. I saw them all, first run, starting with Dr. No as a kid. But really (and the only other films I can think of that had that kind of impact later - like Jaws and Star Wars) Goldfinger broke so many molds, it was electric. For its time. So when I watch it now, I still get a version of that initial 'bump' when I first saw it.
My 'big four' were always Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball. Of course, as the series went on, I thoroughly enjoyed OHMSS, the other two Connery's and initially, the first Moore (LALD of course). Moore wore on me quickly after that, but Bond was Bond and, hey, love him or leave him.
I just never wanted to see Bond turned into a 'policeman' - and a few of the films started to do that. If the story isn't a big one, the villain not a power-hungry, evil, ruthless entity and Bond not both suave and savage - I think the producers are missing the point.
Sorry to go on. So, yeah, Goldfinger. And 'I expect you to die' is a pretty classic line. But we all love BOND - why else would we be here?

Ah, how can one convey it? The whole vibe, the Milk Marketing Board trailer, being pushed out the plane, then JAWS!!!! All with that oddly topical, Seiko watch, Buck Rogers vibe of the long hot summer. Fantastic, along with the extended short before it about skiing in some exotic locale, that recalled TSWLM. That and the local communal baths where you got to pretend you were Moore being gouged by a big python as you held your breathe underwater.

100% with you there on that great vibe!

Capital Radio also ran adverts for Moonraker using the brilliant and semi-classical 'Flight into Space' theme, plus the disco-ey end title, and I recall just how exciting they were to hear. Pretty sure I taped them into a C-60 or a C-90 too... :))

Omg. I totally agree. TSWLM began my passion for Bond and somehow I think it is still one of my best. I saw it at the cinema again a few years beck with Nap and really enjoyed it.
    Awesome movie.

There is something about Roger Moore films that make me feel happy and good about myself. Just the care free adventure of it all is so fun. Add Jaws in and consider my heart warmed!!

I need to find an old school theater near me that play classics and hope they have some sort of Bond marathon so I can experience what you kids of the 70's got to witness.

"From Russia with Love" My first Bond ... saw in the theatre in 1963. As said earlier, it was scary, sexy, topped off with with great characters, gunfights and gimmicks!

It was everything a ten year old could ever ask for.
