alright, so I've been looking for awhile and have searched ebay endlessly but haven't seemed to find a good alternative to the navy overcoat bond wears in the museum.
can anybody give me some leads to a nice trim fitting navy overcoat that won't break the bank?
any help is appreciated. thanks.

I've seen a few places online like brooks brothers selling them right now, but they're rather expensive. I guess it might be easier to find one once it gets closer to winter, but I figure someone may have already bought one from a particular site or store and they could lead me in the right direction.
that doesn't look too bad. not navy but hey there's a black overcoat in skyfall too there's actually one of these in my size on ebay, might pull the trigger and get it. how's the fit on these?

For example

the alfani one is much cheaper and should be fine to throw on over my suits in the winter. thanks again everyone!
The navy overcoat in Skyfall is definitely not a chesterfield. The typical Chesterfield has a velvet collar (though not required), and Bond's does not. That's just the way the light is hitting it. Look at the Blu-ray. Chesterfields are full length, and the Skyfall coat is three-quarter length. Single-breasted Chesterfields have a fly front, and the one in Skyfall does not. The only thing you can identify the Skyfall coat as is a three-quarter overcoat.
I can't help but notice (on my blue-ray) that both outside of the National Gallery (worth a visit every time) and inside the top of the lapel is just slightly darker colored. This could however be lighting or post-production. If not, it is not a typical Chesterfield coat as in DN or LALD. Chesterfield coats are not necessary full length ('fashion' alas), but do regularly have a fly front. The three-quarter coat finds its origins in Italy where it is worn as a sports coat rather than an overcoat, as an overcoat is per definition a long coat.
Its a beautiful three-quarter coat that did not got enough attention due to the other jacket/coats in the film. And one of the more sartorial highlights of the film considering the (narrow, small?) suits.
In this screenshot here the collar is clearly in the same cloth as the rest of the coat: http://thesuitsofjamesbond.com/?p=1702
The top edge of the lapel looks darker as you mention because of the stitching around the edge. Also, in the close-up shots in the movie you can see the top stitching around the collar, which velvet collars typically don't have. There is none on my own covert and chesterfield coats and I've never seen stitching on any velvet collar. The coat Tom Ford sold in stores does not have a velvet collar, but I don't know if it is supposed to be SA: http://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/38945/tom-ford-skyfall-overcoat/
By definition a chesterfield is full length, but you're right that they can be shorter, like the coat in Live and Let Die.
