Speaking of awkward overdubbing there's What's Up Tiger Lily which (like Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series) comically overdubs a Japanese production which features Akiko Wakabayashi and Mie Hama playing characters similar to the ones they played in YOLT (though fortunately Akiko's Tiger Lilly character was not fired off into eternity three fourths of the way through the plot).

Some people felt Sean Connery's saddened reaction to Aki getting suddenly murdered unfairly seemed a bit distance and muted (though his expression was similar to his expression when coming across Ali Kerim Bey's corpse). I think the reaction of Craig's Bond to Aki dying would presumably not be quite as devastating to him as Vesper dying (but it'd still hit him pretty hard and he'd presumably cradle her body while putting on a grim face - almost crying - like when Mathis and M died). I can also easily imagine Dalton's Bond cradling a dead Aki while crying silent angry tears briefly.
That scene seems rather out of place next to the rest of the more cartoonish YOLT. Also, while I think some people finding the ninjas and other trappings of Japanese culture on display in YOLT as offensive an annoying facet of today's hyper sensitive attitudes, James Bond putting on an unconvincing ethnic Japanese disguise is justifiably laughable, offensive, and anachronistic (I know it was from the book, but why didn't Tiger forge background documents claiming Bond was a Japanese person who was an adopted ethnic Russian?).

But seriously, yeah, that would have GREATLY helped what was frankly one of the more ridiculous elements outside of the book versions of Goldfinger and Dr. No (admittedly a great novel, but Dr. No's death literally prompted my imagination as I read it to have Bond stop for a moment and actually crack a one-liner: "Sh-t happens.").

I always thought Mie Hama looked similar to Kim Cattrall (that bird from Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, Big Trouble in Little China, and Sex & the City).

OK, I've popped in my old(is) Ultimate Edition DVD of YOLT earlier this evening and I must say that Sean Connery supposedly being a bit bored/on auto pilot in his Bond role is somewhat exaggerated I must say (but he came across as a bit too relaxed in some of the action scenes). YOLT is very fast paced and fast edited for its era though (too fast paced in parts - poor Aki getting killed is quickly forgotten about).

The singular worst part of the film for me.
But it was a tense and emotionally involving scene. I think they mishandled the aftermath of Aki's death (like I said Connery could've dwelled on it when exploring the island with Kissy and maybe there should've been a
dialogue free scene of Bond emo brooding in the castle gardens while watching Tiger's staff carrying away Aki's body in a shroud while the sun rises).

Tracy's assassination would naturally be a slightly more deeper blow, since Lazenby Bond was going to settle down with her for life, and start a family (which was so cruelly denied), while Bond's more casual relationship with Aki (so tragically cut short) was in the heat of a very important mission with many millions of lives at stake and Aki was a fellow operative (so was expected to be at risk). But I strongly expect Connery Bond would still be wracked by survivor's remorse and in 1971 see Blofeld as the source of most of his emotional woes in recent years through the 1960s (with Aki, Quarrel, Paula, and Ali Kerim Bey all dying on his watch at the hands of Blofeld's mini-army).
James Bond in real life, if he wasn't killed dozens of times over, would be completely be burned out by losing so many colleagues and lovers, writhing with STDs, and also fighting with PTSD (with Craig Bond getting visibly knackered in Skyfall a mere four years after Quantum of Solace making more sense now).

And the two Blofeld continuities would explain how Blofeld is so much different in OHMSS, with a North American accent instead of the English accents used by previous Blofeld performers (and why he didn't detain Bond immediately). I imagine Blofeld in the Connery movies was most likely of British birth and perhaps had a different heritage to the Greco-Polish Blofeld from the original Fleming novels.

Also, to make more sense of the borderline sci-fi stuff happening in YOLT, was that a lot of stuff was happening behind the scenes and you had to read between the lines (like Tiger being so wary about SPECTRE's tremendous influence in Japan through Osato's massive corporation, he was very careful about deploying his troops on that remote island where SPECTRE's secret base was and was introduced hiding inside his underground facility, treating James Bond as a potential intruder, and despite his heavy precautions two hitmen still infiltrated his paramilitary training compound).

It was with a man who was stationed in Korea in the fifties and worked as a journalist for the base he was posted on, then after being discharged worked for a Tokyo newspaper. He was one of the lucky ones who got to interview Connery while they were making YOLT. The production could not get permission to film on the Ginza from the local authorities after numerous attempts and were about to change the location when this journalist told them he could work it out. Within only a day they got permission. Turned out he knew some of the local yakuza from his reporting and told them of the dilemma. Problem solved.

Interesting. Tokyo/Japan is notorious for filmmakers. apparently it is almost impossible to get filming permits here, hence the fact that quite few movies are filmed here, despite the fantastic scenery. Tokyo is a great city for photography/movies but unfortunately you do not see it enough.
Apparently the Lost in Translation filmmakers did a lot of shots without a permit also and without roadbloacks. Such a pity.
