You Only Live Twice was a pivotal moment in cinematic history. Not only did it bring the character of Bond into the seriously big leagues of crazy production value & David Lean movies-level photography (Thank you, Freddie Fields), but it opened up the previously less-known culture of Japan to a WIDE audience.
The action was nearly unbelievable (Thank you Simmons & Armstrong & Co.), and it was absolutely the precursor to the beginning of the Kung-Fu craze in the Western culture just three or four short years later.
Austin Powers lampooned it, Flint copied it, and Why? Because iconic stuff always gets that treatment.
NO Bond movie was ever as influential on the whole world.
That is a great article to my favourite guity pleasure and most watched Bond movie. Everytime I read something like this, I cannot help but wanting to see the movie again.

Much as I love YOLT, surely that honour must go to DN? It sired the James Bond series (obviously including YOLT), inspired hosts of imitators (the long, long list of those begins well before YOLT), and launched many people's careers (Connery, Barry, Andress...).
DN's release was also simultaneous with the Cuba crisis and the launch of The Beatles- it could be said that October 62 shaped the 60s.

I do. I love YOLT, but it is of course heavily over the top and with flaws, like the Japanese make-over and the fact that Connery is not in his finest form.
But....I love it, it is entertainment in its purest form. Naturally love the Japanese scenery, being a current Tokyo resident. Last week went to a sumo wrestling event and thought about this movie again a lot. Yesterday I was in Kobe and wanted to visit the docks. Sadly I had no time, was just a business visit.

Who says it's a guilty pleasure?
Good point! No reason to feel guilty for enjoying a thoroughly entertaining Bond film. -{
