I'm ready for an old school-type villain---I've always referred to them as the 'twisted father figure' to Bond: Dr. No, Goldfinger, etc.---an older man who writes Bond off as meddlesome, or a stupid policeman, but eventually comes to have a grudging respect for our man's refusal to give in and die. And of course he needs a world domination scheme worthy of him.

Good, good, but how about of Middle Eastern appearance, sort of snooty supercilious type, out to create mayhem in the area's troublespots, though avoiding Istanbul as it's been done so much before... A monocle, even.

I'd like to see a the return of Blofeld, but with a bit of backstory.
Actors who could play him? If going down the bald route: Ben Kingsley, Patrick Stewart, Mark Strong.
Whoever the villain, it needs an actor of gravitas who can pull off the clever balancing trick of playfulness & menace. Ian McKellen managed this effortlessly as Magneto. It needs the same sort of charismatic skill.
I just want someone who isn't motivated by a desire for revenge due to a perceived betrayal by M/MI6/Britain/whatever and looks like they could actually intimidate someone.

Exactly! I want one whose means and organization match his egomania, too. We need a volcanic lair once again.

I think we are all going to hear many rumors over the coming couple of years

I like the idea of Blofeld returning very much, this I feel is important and I wouldn't be surprised if he is the villain for Bond 24. Though, I can trust them to do something clever with his build-up, and wether or not they rope in Quantum is their choice. I also like the idea of not knowing who the villain is, like FYEO, until a known character shows him/her true identity (FYEO, TWINE)

I was not a big TWINE fan, so the first great, fully-developed, female Bond main villain would be exciting. Someone similar to Dr. No but a woman. Helen Mirren?

I, too, was disappointed with Elektra King and TWINE, and offered Helen Mirren as a possibility in another thread -- great minds think alike!
I just want to see a decent villain who is trying to take over and/or destroy the world unlike the pathetic villains of the last 2 films. Bond as hero is largely defined by the magnitude of his opponents - protagonist vs antagonist and the last 2 films have not made the grade in that regard.
Looking back to earlier films, Le Chiffre was passable as a villain because off what he could have done with the $100M had he won the poker game and Graves in DAD was a traditional Bond villain with a mad scheme for world domination. That's what I want to start seeing again.
