For anyone who doesn't feel like forking out for the Commander. Barbour launched the new Lutz Waxed Jacket recently. I tried it on today and it's not a bad alternative to the Commander at just over half the price. It lacks the poachers pockets, breast pocket and leather trim, but apart from that I really like it. It has a zip under the buttons too so is perfect for my ophiological surveys in colder weather. Fit is slighty looser than the Commander/ToKito too so if you are wearing these outdoors you can add layers. It will do me for Field Target and hunting too as it has an action back which allows you to hold a rifle without the squeeze around your back that you get with the Bond jacket. Just size down for a more screen fitted look if you don't want to wear it for country sports.

I went to Barbour to buy the Commander but it just didn't fit right. I am cursed with broad shoulders and long arms and a large in the commander was to tight and an XL too big. The guy in the shop suggested i try the Lutz as the fit is a little looser.
It is a great alternative for sure if you are on a budget or just want the look. I am going to have a go at taking the buckle off the collar as that is the only bit i don't like. I take your point about the cord, the one good thing is you cant really see it when the jacket is done up. The only other slight down side to it is that the top button it far away from the next one down. If you leave it undone the jacket is only half done up.
Then I have just come across a Barbour Lutz for a very good price, and that is on it's way:
I think my collection of Barbour is complete for now
The Barbour Lutz is a great alternative. Half the price and as has been mentioned is a slightly more comfortable fit. I also like that it has a zip under the buttons to keep the cold out.
