Not liking the Billy Reid Skyfall peacoat

I ordered a Small from the website, and while it fits well buttoned-up, I find that it forces you to button-up or risk looking bad.

I look like this wearing it unbuttoned:

203_1967_navy_4_1.jpg

It feels and looks way too big around the stomach, and that gets particularly annoying when walking around in windy areas.

Not happy, considering returning.

Looks good unbuttoned...I'm not sure what you're expecting ?:) Any tighter and you wouldn't be able to fasten it....

yes, unfortunately as with a DB suit, you have too wear them buttoned up,
the origins of the DB garment is from the military, this is why you will see that all DB garments have peak lapels,
this has 2 purposes ,1 too make the shoulders look wider, and 2 too keep the occupant warmer,
this is why when you look at soviet troops ,they have DB coats , so if you wear it undone its going too flap
    or get in the way
By the way, did I tell you, I was "Mad"?

Just a thought, but there are several people on AJB looking for a small since BR sold out of this size...maybe offer it here before you return?

It's not clear in your post, but is it because the two flaps are side-by-side when open, as opposed to them laying flat against each other when they're not buttoned together? I can see that appearing strange. However, as many have pointed out, whether it's a $70 H&M peacoat or a $3,000 Tom Ford it's supposed to be worn buttoned up.

Regardless of layout, the coat flaps and gets in the way. Suppose it can be expected in Double breasted jackets, but still a waste of $700.

Something like this would look much better:

You realize this is pinned back for the photo so it looks neat unbuttoned, right? Otherwise this coat could not fasten. You wear a peacoat for warmth, so it's meant to be buttoned up. There's no point in leaving it open. If it's too warm to button up the peacoat, you wear a lighter single-breasted coat.

Your comment is fair, but you look much better in jackets when they are unbuttoned. It's more about style than warmth, which is why the peacoat is a waste of money to me. Another example:

ummm, isn't this a video game character...and I disagree about the "looking better unbuttoned..." Depends on the jacket, wouldn't you say? For example a TF suit jacket unbuttoned is heresy.

In my honest opinion, wool jackets look better unbuttoned, but even the small suit unbuttoned like that video game character is wearing is the perfect look, it's a shame you probably can't even get it tailored to look that good.

It would be a different coat then. Why buy a double breasted peacoat if you want it to look like a single breasted jacket? Bit odd :s

And both those examples shown are unrealistic mock ups. And not even double breasted let alone peacoats. It's like going out and buying some ankle height combat boots and then complaining they don't look like penny loafers :D

I see the look you're going for, but it's not going to happen with a double breasted coat unless you size down to the point of not even being able to button it.

have to agree with everyone else, if you want that fitted look with a jacket undone, why buy a double-breasted peacoat? a $700 one at that. & the main purpose of this coat is to keep you warm outside during the cold months, so why you'd want to have the jacket undone and let all the cold hit you is beyond me. yes, the coat is fashionable but it's overall purpose is to keep you warm...if you wanted a coat just for fashion purposes, I'm sure there were some less expensive options out there.

I have never known of someone who would spend $700 on a coat in hopes of just being able to look good wearing it undone. it's even more ridiculous that you want to return it just for the mere fact that it doesn't.

I love my BR coat, and would never wear it undone. besides, it looks awesome buttoned (and even more so with the collar popped)

    Three and a half :D

I find this tailored suit by email thing hilarious. You can't really get a tailored suit that way. You have to be properly measured with posture and gait and all other idiosyncrasies like asymmetrical arm and leg length, as well as other stuff you can't possibly get unless you go and get fitted three or four times. How do you do that by email :)) You'd be better off going to Next and trying stuff on. A real bespoke tailor calls you in while he is making the suit. You can't get a properly tailored bespoke suit through the WWW! You get a roughly fitted costume. That's all.

Wow why would you pay $700 and wear it unbuttoned? Have you never owned a double-breasted garmet before? It isn't a tailcoat, you are supposed to have it buttoned at all times.

    Love this thread!
I've worn this jacket with my scotch & sodas ralstons, white sunspel v neck and my white leather converse Jack Purcell trainers with the jacket open and it looks great! But I also like it done up when I bust out the shanghai outfit! Its just a matter of style.

A good garment should be able to cross many style boundaries and the billy reid peacoat does this in spades!!

Here's a pic of the jacket from my Instagram account for all you Billy Reid fans.
