DAD's dud diamonds?

Hullo all,

I was recently rewatching DAD, and one thing I still don't get. Bond discovers that the diamonds "Graves" peddles are cointerfit. A give away to this is his laser signature on the stones. Why did Graves effectively sign duff goods?

I always thought they are not fake. They are African conflict diamonds and do not come from Iceland....

I agree, I thought Graves only put his mark on them to fool people in to thinking thty came from his mine.
