Most Disturbing and Saddening Death

Which supporting character's deaths do you find the hardest to sit through? Here is my shortlist:

Vesper Lynd - Goes without saying, her being blackmailed into working for Quantum, which leads to her eventual suicide, overshadowing two whole movies.

Tracy di Vicenzo - Another death that goes without saying, with a meek George Lazenby cradling her corpse in his arms and mumbling having all the time in the world reducing me to tears as a small boy.

Severnaya Staff - Faceless redshirts to be sure, but just regular and likable looking joes doing their job then getting gunned down by a crazed villainess for their trouble. The real emotional effect was from Natalya's saddened reaction to the senseless carnage in her workplace.

Aki - Seeing the sassy, confident Aki getting her lungs constricted (while giving this pleading, frightened gaze) was hard to take.

Strawberry Fields and Mathis - Fields' death was very bizarre and tragically leftfield (with her reception note making you think she was warning about British agents instead of Quantum agents). Mathis comes back after what Bond unintentionally did to him, only to get shot and get respectfully dumped into a rubbish bin.

Ali Kerim Bey - Another unfortunate, anti-climatic death.

When Q, Desmond llewelyn ,in the world is not enough, slowly drops pot of camera,
I always think "that's the last time we will see him alive, I know its not strictly in 100% in accordance

Agree with OP, plus Severine of course. Fields was not just awful, it's the way Craig presses to have her awarded the VC, as it to make amends, like, that's okay then!

The fake Major Derveaux (sp) drowning in Thunderball rather than getting his promised riches.

Blofeld's death in FYEO is hard to endure for other reasons.

I thought he deserved what happened to him because he was disloyal to SPECTRE trying to extort more money from them.

Mine is Della's death in LTK. We don't see what happens which makes it more disturbing, the look of sadness on Tim's face
when he discovers Della's body and Felix calling Della's name made it upsetting for me

For me, the death of Mathis in QoS by a longshot. It was so brutal and unexpected. Plus, I really liked the character.

The death of M in Skyfall. I really enjoyed Dame Judi, and the death of her character genuinely saddened me.

    My list goes as follows:

Aki: She really looked like she suffered terribly before she died from the poison.

Tracy: Her future was looking so bright and then she takes a bullet meant for Bond, quite a shock the first time seeing the film. Even upon later viewings I find it sad since before she met Bond her life was full of sadness and pain.

Della: Being raped and then killed is a terrible fate for a woman. Bond crying her name upon seeing her dead body really drives home the point.

Agree with this for the most 'saddening' death.

The most 'disturbing' death however would have to be Milton Krest, hands down.

Bond obviously didn't care about Tracy so why should we? After we endured their sappy romantic montage he then cheated on her like 20+ times.

I can probably think of at least one for each film:

DN: Quarrel's death bums me out. He didn't want to go to Crab Key. He was afraid to go to Crab Key. Yet, Bond forced him to go and then he ends up being burned to death by the dragon tank.

FRWL: Kerim Bay. I rather liked him.

GF: Jill and Tilly Masterton. Being covered in gold paint is iconic scene, but also pretty brutal. Same with getting your head sliced off by Oddjob's hat.

TB: Bond wounding a shark with his speargun with the intention of it being eaten by other sharks. Very, very cruel.

YOLT: Aki being poisoned. Kill the Bond girl when the movie is 80% over? C'mon!!!

OHMSS: If you disregard the first 2 hours of the film, the doomed wedding is actually really sad.

DAF: Plenty O'Toole didn't deserve to die. She was already thrown like 20 stories out of a hotel room..they should have left it at that. Instead, we see her again dead and floating in a backyard pool.

LALD: Hmm... Kanaga's death by inflation was certainly a bit weird.

TMWTGG: Scaramanga's story about his pet elephant being killed.

TSWLM: Bond killed Stromberg at the dinner table. Shoots him in the groin and 3 times in the chest and Stromberg goes face down into his salad. Also, the young freshfaced "leave it to me Sir" sailor who was gunned down.

MR: Corrine running through the woods being chased by the Dobermans. This is handsdown the most disturbing and saddening death in the entire series. Nightmare alert.

FYEO: Drawing a blank on this one.

OP: Vijay being taken down with the buzz-saw yoyo is hard to watch. I like the quick edit to the flock of birds flying off the tree.

AVTAK: Tibbet being strangled in the carwash. The KGB agent being shoved into the pump propellers. Howe being shot at point blank range. Jenny Flex and other girls floating dead in the mine as May Day mourns them. Zorin's miners being massacred for fun.

TLD: The fight in the kitchen when Necros scalds him with boiling water and then hits him with a frying pan. Ouch!

LTK: Too many to count! Delia's honeymoon death is one I can't bear to watch. Even though it happened off-screen.

GE: Thanks for already mentioning the Severnaya massacre.

TND: Stamper machine gunning the British sailors who thought they were about to be rescued.

TWINE: Bond killing Elektra comes to mind, but I think he did the right thing.

DAD: The "fake" virtual reality sequence showing Money Penny dead.

Stromberg was gunned down with disproportionate brutality, but he had it coming. The more upsetting deaths was when he dumped his pleasant assistant/secretary into the shark tank and when that squat henchman shot that female informer by mistake when aiming for Bond.
TLD: The fight in the kitchen when Necros scalds him with boiling water and then hits him with a frying pan.

He may have actually survived that ('Two dead! Two in hospital!').

    Thanks Blackleiter.

From the Craig era I would say Strawberry Fields death bothers me the most. Partly because it's an overly obvious reference to Goldfinger, but mainly I just really liked her character. She was fairly innocent and didn't deserve such a death. Kind of a downer for me.

A lot of the earlier deaths were kind of fun. :) The movies occupied a cartoonish world somehow, even the Connery ones in a way. Craig's movies are in a more realistic world, and there isn't even the change in tone you would get in the earlier films, where it's an 'eat your greens' moment away from the fun.

That said, Strawberry Fields did sleep with Bond without much persuading or derring do on his part so for that promiscuity she surely had it coming...

Karin Dor being dropped into the Piranha pit is fairly disturbing. Think about how much that would suck.

Another note about Vijay's death in OP: The look of sheer terror on his face and the fact that he wasn't killed instantly. How long was he lying on the beach, sawed in half, before Q eventually found him still alive ? yikes

The Havelocks getting gunned down in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY is pretty downbeat. Ferrara's (off-camera) strangulation, also.

Zorin's cold-blooded shooting of Howe in A VIEW TO A KILL. The machine-gunning of the mine workers from the same film.

I'd say Kerim Bey, but Dad told me the more he saw of the film, the more he saw it coming, for the simple reason "you'd have to bring him back now and then, Pedro Armendariz had passed away, and I started expecting it once he shot Krilencu". With that said, it was probably the most saddening, even though he did guess right. And I agree.

The only death scene in both brutality AND occurance that actually took Dad by surprise was the Severnaya Massacre. As it was my first Bond film in the theater, I would agree. You almost expected Ourumov and Onatopp to be walking in on the former's flunkies.
By the way, are you gonna eat that?
  • BodieBodie Posts: 211MI6 Agent
Mathis - because it was so unnecessary and such as waste of a good character who could have been utilised in future movies.

The death of other characters such as Tracey, Vesper, Kerin Bey etc. are necessary for the plot but Mathis's death served absolutely no useful function. As a character he was written with more depth than Felix and it would have been great to see him again.

For that matter Field's death was totally unnecessary as well. It wasn't as if Bond needed another reason to go after Quantum, but that about sums up QOS.

No, you're playing too much into the hands of older, more bigoted story tropes (like the black guy not surviving in horror/sci-fi thrillers, etc), the real reason she got it was in reprisal for her tripping Elvis down a long flight of stairs.

Dear God, this thread has made me realise that the James Bond character is either a borderline sociopath or good at bottling up a lot of hurt emotions and regret stemming from the sheer weight of survivor's guilt. Especially when some of his closer partners (like Aki and Tracy) were tragically murdered entirely due to botched attempts on Bond's life.

The James Bond franchise dabbles a lot in the Women in Refrigerators and Plucky Sidekick Tragically Killed plot devices.
