    There's something about Tom, that I can't warm to. I don't know
What it is. I like the MI films and the last samurai, the rest of his
    Films, leave me cold.
He also doesn't come across well on the last documentary on
Scientology. He's very good to his fans at premieres etc, which
    I do respect him for.

I do get a kick out of watching Cruise films, even though these days I wouldn't say he's one of my fave actors, but he's starred in some very good films imo.

I generally prefer his 80s-90s films, I get a sense that a fair amount of his 2000s-2010s stuff hasn't been that great.

I've been meaning to watch all of the Mission: Impossible films back to back as I have most of them on DVD. I'd also like to see Top Gun and Valkyrie but that's about it to be honest. They're all on my ever-increasing (in length) "to watch" list! :D

as it just so happens I bough M:I-5 for x-mas today.

I think Cruise is a great actor, I really like some of his films.
but what I dont get: I bought Top Gun earlier this year, tought I must see it because it is praused as THE 80's movie, but all I found that it was boring. the best about it is Kenny Loggins

Personally, I find Tom Cruise hilariously over rated. He has a body of work overflowing with bland, or just crap performances.
He does occasionally do something very interesting, as if to remind us that he does have some talent. Collateral stands out for me as a fantastic film with a quality performance from Cruise.
And anyone with a career as successful as his must be doing a lot right aside from the actual work.
As far as Scientology is concerned, I would recommend the recent documentary, Going Clear to anyone interested in the subject.

I dunno if Cruise is overrated.

But I will say that I think he's a good actor, just not a great one.

Yes, religion shouldn't be mixed with one's liking or disliking of an actor.

Normally it wouldn't, except when the actor himself makes a big
Thing about it. Although there's nothing wrong with liking the guy. :)

Collateral - Quite a good film and thought he played the part well.

The Last Samurai - Not bad, reminded me of ‘Lady Snowblood’ and’ Kill Bill’ so OK without being great.

A Few Good Men - I can’t think of many (if any) bad Jack Nicholson films – enough said.

Born on the Fourth of July - Far too long, boring and I’ll never watch that rubbish again.

Rain Man - I can’t stand Dustin Hoffman but I actually liked this and thought Cruise did a good job.

Cocktail - Basically a waste of time.

The Color of Money - Doesn’t even come close to ‘The Hustler’. And Paul Newman winning an academy award in that role? Let’s (the academy) give him a best actor Oscar before it’s too late - give me a break. John Wayne (True Grit) is in the same category.

Top Gun – I think the soundtrack is the best thing about this film. The dialogue is as bad and contrived as I’ve ever heard. If you think about it, ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ is very similar and which film came first?

Risky Business – I enjoyed this. It was an easy fun film to watch.

I think I've seen Vanilla Sky and some of the MI films but don't remember them that well so won't comment.

As for Cruise himself, based on the interviews I’ve watched, he comes across as a bit of a nerd. As for that Scientology BS – I’m not surprised Katie Holmes ditched him.

Finally, I couldn’t see it on the original list and I may be confused, but was Tom Cruise in a film (certainly early in his career - probably early 80's) where he was brought up in the jungle by gorillas or something like that? I may have my actors and films mixed up but I recollect him or someone else? impersonating apes or something.

Watched a brilliant documentary on the attempted assassination of Hitler.
If they had have kept the meeting to the original location ( Hitler's Bunker)
Everyone would have been killed, but as it was a nice day it was moved
    to an ordinary office block.

Not really a big fan of his but he has been in a few movies I've enjoyed...

    Tropic Thunder
Cuise's turn as the foul mouthed, borderline psychotic and physically unrecognizable movie mogul Les Grossman is absolutely hilarious and shows a heretofore unseen facet of Cruise's acting ability.

    Edge of Tomorrow
A very smart sci-fi movie from a couple of years ago which is basically a mashup of Groundhog Day and Aliens. The movie is just Cruise living thru the same day over and over again thousands of times, each time thru changing events a little (or a lot) and getting closer and closer to defeating the aliens and saving the Earth all while also becoming a real soldier and better human being. Another very underrrated acting performance.

    Oblivion
Another good sci-fi adventure with Cruise playing an astronaut who slowly discovers that the world is very different from what he thought it was. Good stuff.

I could care less about Cruise's personal life, and I think a lot of it is just the usual media over-reaction, looking for some sensational story to print, but when it comes to his movies the money always ends up on the screen. You have to give him credit for that.
