slim suit vs normal

Hi Guys

what is the actual difference in a slim version of normal suit ..
is it the width of the legs on the trousers and arms of the jacket?

Yes (what you mentioned), and the jacket length is also generally shorter. The shoulders are typically unstructured, and the waist is very suppressed so that the jacket hugs your body (comfortably), rather than draping.

    On a less literal level,

the other difference is a conventional suit has a standard timeless quality. It doesn't have to be tailored or tailor made to be flattering.
The skinny suit is a catwalk model. Fashionable today, give it a couple of years it will look dated to the point of silly. Plus it is not remotely forgiving to any figure that is not slim, or muscular with no waistline.

Having said that, it did work for the Beatles.

Slim suit. All the QoS and SF Tom Ford tailoring was for Mr Craig. The costume designer for SF said it was deliberate to show off his build. (No waistline).

About 10 years ago brands started putting out "slim fit" suits, which were more fitted than their regular suits. The standard suit used to be made with extra room in the waist to allow a wide range of body types to wear it. Slimmer people needed the waist taken in on their suits and the "slim fit" made it so the waist already fit closer like it should. It made sense. A "slim fit" suit was a better fit for slim men. It already had the tailored look, and slim men didn't need to have their tailor take in the waist. They were often styled with double vents instead of single, and single-pleated trousers instead of double. Now the term means something completely different.

"Slim fit" is no longer a fit, it's a fashion. Now it means a suit that has a too-tight, too-short jacket with narrow lapels, paired with tight, low-rise trousers. The suits in Skyfall are the "slim" style. The Quantum of Solace suits are fitted. If the Quantum of Solace suits were found off the peg, you could call that a slim-fit suit in the older sense because they have a suppressed waist, but they don't follow the current "slim fit" trend since they have timeless proportions.

Very true! The slim suits will soon look as silly as the baggy suits of 20 years ago do.

The Beatles wouldn't have looked so good if they wore the fashion suits people wear today. Show me a picture of the Beatles wearing a slim suit and I'll point out the differences.
