Thoughts on the Crockett and Jones Highbury?

Hello,
I'm thinking of making my 3rd Crockett and Jones purchase and am on the fence about which pair. It's between the Highburys and the Tetburys. I was originally dead set on the Tetburys, but after much online research have read that some people are not big fans of the Antique Nubuck leather they are made out of, some have had issues with stretching, excessive creasing, as well as them being too easily scuffed. Though many people reported they did not have these problems.
Does anyone here have experience either/ both of these models?
I'm from Alaska, so the Tetbury was an easy sell at first because it's a boot, now I may switch to the Highbury because they are made of trusty calf leather...

My wife actually just ordered me a boot that C&J makes for a shooting lifestyle brand in the UK called Purdey that is exactly the same boot as the Islay, but built on a slightly more elegant last, the 325 last which is a classic country boot last from what I've read. I had my wife choose between the Islays and Purdeys and she chose the Purdeys. Which is probably for the best, since my feet are narrow and I was worried a bit about how the wider Islays would fit. I'll be able to try them on when I get back home from work in 10 days. They can be seen here:

I'm not sure if anyone is looking, but Pediwear did have a few sizes in the Islay a few weeks ago.
They are in black wax calf. I have no idea how these compare to the antique nubuck but to my eye they appear exactly the same.
I'm unsure if this is the leather that C&J will make Tetburys in from now on or whether there was some sort of mix up with my order.
I have no intention of sending mine back for a pair in antique nubuck as these are beautiful boots.
I am still waiting on my pair of Tetburys to arrive.

They look the same as the antique nubuck to me as well and even the link has antique nubuck in it as well.
I actually asked about the price increase involved on having this done, still waiting to hear back. I think the customization will bring the price up to Hand Grade levels though, at that point I would probably just go hand grade.
I think they may be the same thing, the description definitely still states Nubuck and the sales person I've been communicating with made no mention of a switch in materials, even after I made mention of my pensiveness to the nubuck.
Thanks for your take on the Highburys, I hope you enjoy them for a long time
Thank you, I will find out if they are indeed the same leather.
Every shoe will get scuffs at one point or another.
As for wrinkling, it may be due to having a low instep.
I look forward to hearing your take on the Tetburys -{
I heard about the leather issues from reading through some older threads on styleforum. The complaints mainly came from people comparing them to other C&J shoes that they owned, but maybe it was poor fit or an isolated batch of leather that caused the hubbub. It was recommended to me that I size down half on the Tetburys, but not on the Highburys, which are on the same last. Maybe the people that were having issues should have sized down because of their foot shapes. Not sure.
Hi,
I'm a half-size down on the Tetbury, Highbury and Islay (8.5uk) where-as I'm a UK size 9 in the Adidas Gazelle II's and Church's Ryder III's and basically all other shoes/boots/trainers I own.
Crockett & Jones are the only make I seem to have to take a half-size down. I'd managed to buy a pair of Church (Royal) Philip shoes off of eBay in an 8.5(UK) in the hope that they'd fit like C&J shoes however, even with the longer 002 Last they were too tight (was gutted!!) and feel that a UK size 9 will do. I returned the Church Philip shoes (they were beautiful btw) for a refund.
I hope this helps!
Merry Christmas to a fantastic forum (too addictive!) {[]
Sincerely,
Gary.
First impressions. WOW. As soon as you open the box you get the waft of leather, once you have put all the wrapping aside the boot feel incredibly well made. Once I get home this evening and test them for a more complete review. They are the same as the Highbury but just in a boot form. I also noticed they sell these in a dark brown suede, which I am very temped to pickup as pair as they in my opinion are a little bit less informal.
In short though, I am very impressed with these and I will be sure to add some more to this later on.
It helps. I'm still not 100% on sizing, but your thoughts will help with my final choice.
I look forward to your detailed review! I'm about to pull the trigger between one of these, let me know how you think they stack up -{
Thank you!
PM sent.
However, one bad thing is I have managed to snap the one of the laces already. So I will visit C&J to get some replacements. Also while on the subject of the laces, this is one thing I don't like about the Highbury shoes is the laces which I am going to be replacing with the same style as the Tetbury's and the Alex's
I do think the Tetbury's do have a lot more options to them when it comes to wearing them out and about, as they go well with formal and inform wear. In my option the Highbury's are more of a formal shoe, so they naturally work with business attire very well.
They are both equally as comfy, the Highbury's are the only shoes I have owned that from new haven't given me any blisters on my feet. If you haven't had a chance to try ether of them on I can highly recommend it.
In terms of the sizing, depending on the shoe / trainer I can take ether a 9/10 (UK size) but the size 9 in both the Highbury and Tetbury both fit me well. Again it would be my recommendation that you visit a C&J store to ensure you get the correct size.
Overall, I have been very impressed with both C&J shoes and I will be highly recommending them to anyone. I do also plan on getting the Alex shoes to complete the collection but they may also have to wait as I will probably get another pair of the Tetbury's first.
If you have any more questions just ask.
Spot on ajd_007 - I too have owned the tetburys for a while and love them... I probably wear them a little too much and one shoe did suffer a small scuff - so previous posts observing the softness and vulnerability of the leather are probably fair, but unless you're chasing down an assassin on a police bike, you're probably not going to suffer....
And I too treated myself to the highburys, from the C&J in Treadneedle st in the City, and am very pleased ,... They don't blister my feet ( rare indeed in a new shoe) and and great to dance in... Yep they serve the black tie party well while being a great "suit" shoe too...
So now it's onto the alex's... I'd tgt I wouldn't need them as the highburys do the tux job well, but I liked trying them on and wish I'd bgt both....
And a word for the still excellent Islay's - these are just great with jeans or hiking... And they will probably last twice as long as the other pairs....
I was surprised when they switched from Church or even John Lobb, but can now see the sense... These are much more shoe for your money, and are fantastic...
Finally on sizing.... I think the tetburys are about 1/2 size bigger than their stated, so i'd try a size smaller just in case... As they're so comfy you might benefit.
Cheers
As above Church Philip's in UK size 9. I would say at least 8.5 out of 10 for condition. Just back from the Nordstroms shoe shine. Lightly broken in and that is it. They were $650 new back in 2011. Value of half that now? If you can find them. Cheers.
Hi,
Thanks for the photos, they are beautiful shoes! ;%
I'd like to buy them from you and I'm happy with price (half of $650?).
I will PM you my email address. If you could let me know what way would be best to pay you + shipping of course.
kind regards,
Gary.
