Re-cast the lead(s) of movie classics

I think it would be fun to speculate who could be cast in remakes of old movies (pre 1990's).

Here are some of my ideas:

Die Hard: Bradley Cooper as john McClane

The Searchers:

Liam Nesson as Ethan Edwards
Joseph Gordon- Lewitt as Martin Pawley

    The League of Gentlemen

With various young british actors, but with Sir Ian McKellen playing the Jack Hawkins part.

Heh! That's fun, I certainly like Gosling for Schaffer: he'd do that quietness well. I know he's the wrong nationality but I'd quite like a Clooney type as Smith. Or Liam Neeson perhaps? But he might actually be getting a bit old now.

    Interesting choices N24.

    I would go as follows;

    Major Smith - Daniel Craig
    Schaffer - Scott Eastwood/Chris Pratt/Chris Hemsworth
    Mary - Joanne Froggatt/Vanessa Kirby
    Heidi - MyAnna Buring
    Von Hapen - Tom Hardy

I'm not sure about Craig in this one and I don' think Scott Eastwood has the actin chops to play Schaffer, but I did consider Chriss Pratt and Chris Hemsworth. I don' t like Froggatt as Mary, but the other actresses are good.

    WHERE EAGLES DARE

    Major Smith: Colin Firth
    Schaffer: Chris Pine
    Mary: Amy Adams
    Heidi: Diane Kruger
    Von Hapen: Michael Fassbender

I think Firth, just like Burton, is too old. Joachim Rønneberg who was only 24 when he was the leader of the Vemork mission. The oldest Norwegian SOE member was 44 when he joined, and he was only accepted because he had " a particular set of skills". Chris Pine was on my list for Major Schaffer.

I like Hemsworth for it! Not sure we’ve found our perfect Smith yet though :)

I don't know...I see Smith as being a 'too old for this mission' kind of guy anyways...he even comments as such several times in the film. I think the main reason that he goes is that he's got the connection to that one other German commander who knows him (during the big dining room sequence) to help verify his story. As such, his age is secondary to the fact that he's the right person for the job.

To that end, I see Firth having the necessary acting chops and charm to do the part justice.

Good points. But Burton was 45 when he made Where Eagles Dare while Colin Firth is 59. Burton was an alcoholic, but Firth is still 14 years older. Maybe Michael Fassbender (43) could be a good Smith? Instead Stellan Skargård can play von Hapen.

Actually I miscalculated. Born in 1925 he was 43 when he made Where Eagles Dare. Eastwood is only five years younger.

That was my thought too! :D

Wow: I’d have said he was about 15 years younger in that movie.

Eastwood is a healthfreak, Burton was an alcoholic.
  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent
Yeah I thought he was much younger than late thirties in that.

It’s hard to think of a British lead who would be good in it. I was thinking Cruise would actually make a good Smith. Maybe we can swap the American and British leads? :)
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,330MI6 Agent
I still think Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender can be good Smith's.

Fassbender being German (and fluent in German), I'd slot him as Von Hapen. He also has the right intensity to him for the role and would be amazing in the dinner confrontation.

    Yeah he'd be cracking there.
Christian Bale as Smith maybe? I'm not 100% sold, I'd still prefer a younger Liam Neeson.
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,330MI6 Agent
Fassbender speaks German and I'd like to see a version of WED where more German is spoken. That includes the commandoes. I don't know of Skarsgård speaks German, but many Swedes do and he seems to have a good ear for languages. Perhaps German actors should play the Germans and having Fassbender play Smith he canspeak more German while undercover.
I do agree a younger Liam Neeson would be perfect.

    Russell Crowe is 56 :D
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,330MI6 Agent
I'm trying to think like a movie director or producer and they are perhaps not well knoww enough to headline a big movie. This isn't a watertight argument, because the same could have been said about Russell Crowe when they made LA Confidential too.
  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent
Crowe is maybe a little old, but I agree he would have been great for it.

Agree Cruise would make a good Smith and would be interesting to swap the parts.

I'm watching "Once upon a time in the west". Other than som bad dubbing and sound effects the movie is perfect, but if the movie was made 10-15 years ago I'd like to see this cast:

    Harmonica - Russel Crove

    Frank - Tom Hanks

    Chyenne - Javier Bardem

    Jill - Scarlett Johansson

    Morton - John Goodman

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,330MI6 Agent

    The Rocketeer

Cliff - Ansel Elgort (Chris Pratt for an older, bigger star)

Jenny - Vanessa Hudgens (or Alison Brie)

Sinclair - George Clooney (or John Hamm)

    River of no return.

Who can possibly replace Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe? Possibly no-one, but I Imagine two re-makes - one in the 1990's and one today.

    River of no return (1995)

    Matt - Harrison Ford

    Kay - Salma Hayek.

    River of no return (2021)

    Matt - Dwayne Johnson

    Kay - Scarlett Johansson

    Ladyhawke (1980s)

Gaston - Robert Downey jr. He has the same charm and agility as Matthew Broderick, but I think Downey has enough range not to come across as a California teen in fantasy European middle ages.

Navarre - Sean Connery. He would've been a great heroic and tragic knight.

Isabeau - Isabella Rosselini. Stunningly beautiful, mysterious and a good actress. Remember; no short 80s hair!
