First half of DAD is great, love the hovercraft chase -{ . Goes a little down hill
in the second half. Although like Moonraker and YOLT is fantastic escapist
    over the top fun. :))

I don't totally agree with the 1st half vs. 2nd half breakdown of D.A.D. It's somewhat inconsistent from start to finish with many great scenes occuring in the 2nd half.

Definitely a lot of OTT fun to be had though. The PTS is one of the best ever. Great to see an Aston Martin again. (well...sort of) and Brosnan is always great.

PS- Did you know that Tomb Raider featured that same Aston Martin before Die Another Day came out?

I also might be one of the few who think Gustav Graves is a great villain. ;)

I watched it. I still think it's the worst bond film, but I still enjoy it. TWINE was on last week, and TND the week before that, and GE before that. I wonder if CR will be next week?

Yesterday I watched Skyfall and later when I got in, I watched DAD and have to admit, The
higher standard of film making is clear between them. Skyfall has a far deeper emotional
context and Bond himself seems a more rounded character. While DAD although fun, has
Bond in the old role of " circus master " merely introducing action sequences.
In the right mood DAD is fun, but it is one of the weaker Bond films.

It is the worst of the Brosnan films.

Ironically enough when it came out, Empire magazine ran a cover headline with "Best Bond Ever"

I too really enjoyed the first half and much of the second half scenes are good, but the ridiculous CGI killed it for me.

well I had to watch it as I started this thread off, and all through the film ,I keep thinking to myself
why do these guys hat DAD? if you hate DAD youd have to hate all the MOORE films too? I personally see them in the same mould
but that is my opinion, :)) if there was one tinsy winsy thing id change is the new Q ,not that JC is a terrible actor far from it
he (Q) is just a bit too Basil Fawlty for me , but DAD has all the usual Bond ingrediants for me ,OTT gadgets/locations/plot/ ect
now just have to sit back and wait for flak from you lot :))

No flak from this direction. It's far from the best Bond but I've never understood the hatred DAD recieves.

I would say 'hate' is too strong an emotion....it disappoints me because of the strong start...it starts off as a Bond film that could have been written for DC - minus the too cheesy gags - but then nose dives...and the fencing scene between Bond and Graves is STUPID ! You don't fence like that and you can see them telegraph the next move - often one of them is in the 'block' position way too early X-(
That's what annoys about this film...a great start and idea but its just tossed away...

Speaking of DAD, would anyone know what's the story with Vic Armstrong as it was the Last
Bond he worked on. Was there a falling out ? As at first I thought he might have been semi-retired
but I read he was second unit director on the new Jack Ryan movie.

I just assumed is was 'director' preference...some favour their own team...plus he could have been busy...

I can understand the outrage, but whereas most fans seem to dismiss the film completely I find many great scenes that make it worthwhile.

What was the awful final line in the movie? "You're so good when you're bad." or something

Along those lines, Die Another Day is actually very good when it's good, but when it's bad it's VERY bad.

It's the Fast Food Vs. Quality Cuisine debate.
DIE ANOTHER DAY falls into the Fast Food category - Easily digestible, but leaves you with hunger pangs.
By comparison, SKYFALL is Quality Cusine - One you save for a special treat, leaving you totally fulfilled.

Sorry Tam, I would not go that far with Skyfall. Its like one of those nice puddings that comes in the box with the over embellished artwork! Delicious and satisfying, but the pacakging (ie hype and publicity) is overblown compared to the product itself! Casino R 06 on the other hand, that had the three courses and the wine thrown in too! :D
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

I disagree that if you hate DAD you have to hate the Moore films as well. The difference is that the Moore films knew what they were doing and went for it full force. DAD gets lost trying to have elements of Dalton era films and elements of Moore era films, and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to put those together in a film that actually works. Add to that a terrible bond girl (maybe the worst ever), a boring villain, a crappy Q...it just goes on and on. And if that wasn't bad enough they stuffed the whole film with ham fisted "references" to all the prior bonds. I know that was supposed to make us fans happy, but it was ridiculous.

I will say this, and I reckon many of you would agree - the worst bond film is still more fun to watch than many many other films. In other words, I don't hate DAD, I just like it the least of all the bonds.

I just enjoy the heck out of DAD. I don't deny it's over the top nonsense pretty much from start to finish but I never fail to engage with it and I never feel it's a bad film after watching it, just a heavily flawed one
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.

Thinking that Brosnan was going to do like 6 or 7 Bonds I was ready to dismiss D.A.D as a throwaway film as I eagerly awaited his next 007 outing. Unfortunately, since we only get 4 it forces me to try to appreciate this one a bit more.

Yes, I am still bitter and have yet to warm to the DC era.

I actually like Die Another Day but the only thing I can't understand is the purpose of Michael Madsen' s Falco character all he seems to gripe mainly about the British.
  • JayCobb1045JayCobb1045 Posts: 79MI6 Agent
Not sure if this was actually confirmed or if it's just many viewers' suspicions, but I think his sole purpose was to set up the character for a meatier role in the Jinx spinoff that we're all so glad was never made.
