DAF 'what if's'

I have a soft spot for DAF. And looking into the films production, it could have been a belter of a film. At one point Faye Dunaway was rumoured to be playing Tiffany Case. Lazenby could have still been 007, Telly Savalas would have returned as Blofeld and there was supposedly an ending where Bond cashes a stumbling Blofeld over a salt mine (Get Carter style ending) before Blofeld falls to his death. This really could have been the first and ultimate 'Revenge' Bond that both LTK and QoS tried to be...oh well.

I would have loved to see Lazenby in DAF. I haven't actually read the novel yet, but I imagine the "pure fleming" approach might have worked better. EON should have stuck to their guns and made this one like OHMSS.

If Peter Hunt had returned as director (he was supposedly offered but turned it down) then maybe this would have been closer to the novel or a Bond revenge storyline.

World have been amazing to see Lazenby make his seven Films like he was Contracted for. DAF would have had Bond killing Blofeld (By Strangulation like in the Novel) The Series would take a different Route with it most likely being a Mix of the Connery and Dalton Styles. Roger Moore would never have played Bond, but Dalton would most likely take over after Lazenby left. I believe there was an Ending planned for DAF that had Blofeld getting Captured in his escape Pod (Not sure if this is true though)

I don't mind DAF in its current form, though to me, it sets the stage for the Moore films. However, I do think GL would have just gotten better by the time this film was made, and it would have been a very different movie. It's a shame that we will never know for certain if it would have been a great.

I have also wondered what would have happened if Lazenby had made DAF. Savalas would have stayed on as Blofeld. I actually think Jill St John was great as Tiffany other than when she becomes an airhead on the platform. I hope Bond would have killed Irma Bunt since it was her who killed Tracy. More scenes outside the US would have been great. Since diamonds is a theme in DAF, Bundt could have been killed in Jerusalem or in South Africa. Blofeld should have been killed in the salt mine, the way it was planned. This way DAF would have been a great revenge movie.

I enjoy DAF as well, mostly for Connery, but I think the scenario you described would have been very interesting. Such a shame that we'll never know.

I don't think I would buy into a revenge story for Diamonds Are Forever. I think Fleming had it right in You Only Live Twice with Bond having a breakdown and then being sent on a ridiculous mission to either bring him back to reality or get him killed off before he becomes a liability (like he was in The Man With the Golden Gun). You Only Live Twice only became a revenge story when Bond stumbled onto Blofeld in Japan. I think this would have been better than a movie with Bond set on revenge from the very start.

I read last night on bond wiki or something similar that Ilse Steppat was going to be in Diamonds are forever but died after ohmss was released.

Controversially, I suspect that DAF as we have it is more entertaining than any of these various 'what if' versions might have been.

It is a tricky one for me because on one hand I adore Diamonds are Forever and would never rid of its place in the series but on the other hand the thought of what could have been still upsets me. If there was a way to somehow still have Diamonds Are Forever and a revenge follow up to OHMSS then that would be ace!

I love to see some appreciation for DAF in this forum. I understand completely why people dislike it but if you take it with a grain of salt and for what is then it is just so damn fun!

My views on DAF keep changing. Many of the ideas, put forward
By Members here for a more revenge based story etc, sound fantastic
and probably may have made a better film then ......
... It is a fun film, sure there are some silly moments ( a sign of things
to come) yet, it also has some terrific scenes ( to me at least)
