Why did Lazenby say

"This never happened to the other fella?" when Teresa drives of from the beach. Were they trying to imply a different person took the name James Bond, so Connery & and Lazenby are not a continuation?.

I took it as an in-joke to the audience, i.e. "This never happened to Connery when he played Bond." Not that this is a different Bond, just a different actor playing him.

+1, a joke for the audience letting them know that it might be a different face
but it's the same character.

On the director's commentary, Peter Hunt says it was a joke. But I recall reading that an earlier draft of the script was to explain that Bond had undergone plastic surgery because he was too recognizable . . . the line always felt to me like a leftover from that script, where it would have been a clever joke without having the acknowledge the audience directly.

I'm glad they ditched that Idea, otherwise they would have had to use it with every change of Actor.

I refuse to believe that the 'Blofeld' in FYEO was real. Like the PTS was a Dream that Bond had about wanting to finally kill Blofeld.

I heard Lazenby used this phrase when things were not going his way or he didn't get what he wanted...and when they filmed the scene Peter Hunt told him to use the phrase as they needed an end of scene line...not sure how true that is though...

Just spoke with a fellow fan, now in his 70's, who told me that in theatres, the This Never Happened to the Other Feller" line got a huge pop from the audience, much like when Bond kills Grant on the train, and straightens his tie.
John Barry even named, what most of us consider to be, the best song on the soundtrack of OHMSS.
I spoke with George Lazenby at a chance meeting in LA about 10 years ago, and he did cooberate the story that his favourite line was just that, as he felt that Connery was treated better, and that the producers were taking advantage of an inexperienced actor. We all know that Connery stood up to Saltzman, especially, and would not back down. Lazenby didn't know the ropes yet, and it was really Telly, Diana, and Joanna Lumley who smartened him up a bit.
Lazenby even admits later that alot of it went to his head, and he began to believe his own press, which is suicide for an actor or performer.
In any case I think that the 4th wall break and Other Feller line was an inspired choice, and is a memorable part of a very moving and iconic film.

Nice theory, but that glance right into the camera after he says the line convinces me that he was telling the audience - "Hey - they never had the girl run away from Connery!"

He signed his autograph on a photo for me, and he seemed like a pretty nice fellow. Lazenby appeared to be still humbled by the lingering realization that he failed to capitalize on his big break.

Interesting theory but... isn't that EXACTLY what happened to Prince Charming? I mean - sure he eventually got the girl, but initially he was just left with her shoe.

What I understood it to mean was that if Connery had saved the girl, she wouldn't have run off.
