Your Pick For Bond Movie Milestones

In trying to be as objective as possible for me, I'd say the three most awesome milestones in the Bond Franchise have been DN, TLD & CR.

Dr. No introduced us to Bond.
The Living Daylights brought us back to a serious Bond.
Casino Royale rocked the casbah with a new interpretation.

There can, of course, be many views on this.
Let's hear them, if you please. -{
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

    DN --- Launching the franchise.
OHMSS --- A different actor for the first time.
GE --- Post-Cold War Bond launched, generation gap
CR --- Reboot as mentioned in the OP :)
    "Better luck next time... slugheads!"

I would have problems picking three milestones. Ideally it would be five:

    DN - the first
    GF - set the standard
OHMSS - First with a new actor
GE - Reboot for the post-cold war age
CR - New timline and new (old?) style

OK, If you hold a gun to my head:

    DN
    GF
    CR

I could go at this from many different angles, but I'll go with this one...

Goldfinger - set the gold standard and marked the true beginning of Bondmania/Spymania
The Spy Who Loved Me - established Roger Moore as a successful successor to Connery, and significantly raised the bar in terms of scale and production values
Goldeneye - Brought the series back from the dead and reestablished it as a modern franchise

    DAF, heaviest Bond ever
    AVTAK, oldest Bond ever.

DN -- The rocket blasts off.

OHMSS -- One-off in terms of seriousness, faithfulness to the novel and lead actor. Most polarizing among hardcore fans (high water mark for people like me, low pint for others).

TSWLM -- All the reasons Golrush007 said.

GE -- End of the 6-year hiatus.

    CR -- Reboot.

DN - Start of franchise/Introduces Connery to the world.
GF - Stamps the franchise's rules in stone on how to make the films.
OHMSS - Brings Bond back to Fleming/one of the best of the series.
GE - Brings back the series with a bang after a lengthy absence.
CR - Throws out the rules of the old EON series with a return to
Fleming and his Bond and modernizes the plot.
SF - Cleans out the cobwebs of Bond's life - childhood/M/MI6/his
homestead/flat/Aston to set up a return of a reborn 007 with
    new missions.

Not surprisingly, 100% agreement on one film: DN. :))

Not quite 100%! I deliberately didn't include DN because it was on everyone's list and also, the fact that it is the first means it is an obvious milestone so I thought I would take that as a given, and try to single out three other milestones. Ultimately I could easily have picked five or six. It is certainly an intriguing exercise trying to pick these. :)

I would say there are definitely more than three milestones in the Bond franchise:

DN - the kickstarter of the franchise

GF - turned Bond into a cinema icon, and firmly established "Bondmania"

OHMSS - first film with a change of Bond star

TSWLM - as mentioned already, the film which firmly established Roger Moore as James Bond

LTK - a bold entry, containing a dark tone and more confrontational violence than what people expected a "standard Bond film" to be

GE - brought the franchise back from a long hiatus, proving Bond to be as popular as ever

CR - rebooted the Bond franchise

SF - the 50th anniversary film; peeling away the layers of James Bond bit by bit

I don't disagree with any of the above, but surely we have to include Live and Let Die. Even if you don't like Roger Moore this was a critical film in proving that James Bond COULD survive without Sean Connery. If this had failed then there would have been no Dalton, Brosnan and Craig.

I don't think LALD proved that the Bond films could continue without Connery anymore than OHMSS did. It was TSWLM that proved that.

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!

True, and what LALD managed that OHMSS didn't was that it was a big financial success. However, I stand by my original choice of TSWLM as the milestone film of the Moore era, because it combined huge financial success with a significant step forward in scale and production value, whereas LALD was financially succesful, but didn't raise the bar at all.
