not only that, but according to the Timboys and their highpriest Sir Miles, Dalton was close getting the role for Dr. No, Rambo, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and The Birds.
And of course, FYEO, Octopussy, AVTAK, GE, Star Wars, Batman and all Leatal Weapon scripts have been written with him in the main role 8-)
President of the 'Misty Eyes Club'.
Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
Looking back upon it now, it does seem strange to know that we nearly got Dalton in GE
It would have been a different film no doubt! I personally feel like we were ready for a reboot with a fresh, new face as Bond at that particular time. Sure Brosnan did a couple that don't quite measure up as Bond classics, but I freakin love GE so much! I just watched it again last week and even though that motorcycle stunt in the beginning is hard to swallow, it has all of the elements that I look for in a classic Bond film. It actually forces me to ask the question to myself: would Dalton's appearance as 007 with that script and Martin Campbell's direction affected the film's overall quality, or would that have cemented his legacy as 007 in my eyes? Alas we will never know )

Maybe you read the article again. Cubby was in a position having to fire Dalton, but Dalton took the step earier and bowed out.
I can't see that "we nearly got Dalton" for GE.
I remember back in the day (there was no internet and stuff) that it was absolutely clear that Brosnan would take the role after the mishap with TLD where he's been already the top choice.

Ok, it's the sequel, but owing to a slight case of not being born yet he couldn't do the original )
According to you Timboys, that would not have stopped him ) )
And he'd played Rhett Butler hard-edged in the original and Scarlett at the same time......

Haha. Why am I just seeing this??? Hilarious Also, even though I am totally bored by Dalton's Bond it is not surprising to me that he got the role of Rhett Butler. I remember seeing him in the really cheesy Flash Gordon movie of the early 80's as the Baron wearing the mustache...dude could have been Clark Gable's illegitimate son he looks so much like him lol. I have nothing at all against him as an actor. I just didn't like him as Bond.

Grew up with Bond. Saw "Spy", and read the books carried on enjoying it till LTK and then it stopped
Quite a surprise as the Dalton efforts were superb. Then we had to look to ourselves. I kept up with 007 fanzines and kept an idea on the newspapers to see what was happening. Lawsuit followed lawsuit. I was starting my career, moving out, and starting relationships. I saw Pierce in Remington Steele late at night and wasn't impressed. When he was announced as James Bond I wasn't impressed. We had a discussion down the pub about how he was keeping the Americans happy.
Seeing Goldeneye come back I was happy they didn't make a hash of it as it was without Cubby. But the films got worse and worse. Till I was holding my hands in front of my face with DAD.
Luckily it was given a second shot with CR and the future is looking good.

My story is really sad . I became obsessed with Bond movies in 1988. I was 13 years old and watched them all that year in VHS up to TLD which had just been released in video.
Then in september I read in a movie magazine (no internet then) that Dalton was doing a new one called "Licence Revoked". By early 1989 I remember buying magazines to follow up and being really excited about it. When LTK was released mid july 1989 I saw it twice. Loved it.
Then nothing. Void. I knew they released one every two years since before I was born, so I remember being very disappointed. Summer 1991. Nothing. It was like "Bond interruptus" . Then 1992,1993. By 1994 I was more into -{ ...
When they announced Pierce Brosnan I was like, "yawn". Then I saw GE. Yawn. Movies had changed. No Richard Maibaum, no Maurice Binder, no John Barry. And specially I disliked Brosnan after Dalton with a vengeance.
I only got into Bond again in the 00s because of the DVDs (I have all but Brosnan's) and then CR and Craig, the best since Connery.
Much as I think Dalton was the closest any actor has got to the literary Bond.
I do accept, the points made by others over the years, that for whatever reasons
Dalton wasn't accepted by the movie audience.
It would have been hard for any actor to follow in the shoes of Sir Roger. :007)

I don't think it was Dalton's fault. The marketing strategy for LTK was a mess. For a start they shouldn't have released LTK in summer 1989 against Batman, Indiana Jones and Lethal Weapon II.
Yes, it would have been hard for any actor to follow in the shoes of Sir Roger. I can only think of one name: Jim Carrey. Thank God, we got Dalton instead.
