Orbital Space Laser Movies; DAF vs. DAD

chrisisallchrisisall Western Mass, USAPosts: 9,062MI6 Agent
Both OTT, both silly at times, both with a fairly lame villain characterization, both with a deadly space laser.
DAF is naff.
DAD is a DUD.

Which wins?

I love Pierce, but he is no Connery. Add to that John Barry & Ken Adam, and it's an easy choice for me.
Diamonds Are Forever.

You?
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

To me, it all comes down to Halle Berry vs. Jill St. John and I just so happen to prefer Jill St. John.

Even though DAF is OTT it is nowhere near the level of DAD IMO. DAF is the far superior movie for me

And it has a certain unmistakable charm to it, but since it was my first Bond movie, I may be prejudiced... 8-)

I quite like DAF tbh. It has some really good scenes and Wint and Kidd are great, memorable henchmen

Connery V Brosnan - Connery wins
Blofeld V Graves - Blofeld wins
Wint & Kidd V Zao - Wint & Kidd win
Peter Franks V Mr Kil - Franks wins
Tiffany Case V Jinx - Tiffany wins (even though she annoys me)

Throw in the fact that DAF features appearances from Felix and a John Barry score I think I'm going to give the victory to DAF. The only thing that DAD has going for it is the PTS.

While I agree with the previous list, there are more aspects:

Triumph Stag vs Vanquish - Vanquish wins
Moonbuggy chase vs ice chase - Ice chase wins
medicore music score vs. David Arnold - Arnold wins
Diamonds are forever song vs DAD song - DAF wins by a mile
Oil rig location for the last minutes vs. Ice palace location - DAD wins
PTS DAF vs. PTS DAD - DAD wins by a mile!

I've always thought DAF had one of the better Barry scores - far better than the film deserved !

True enough Bondtoys. My personal dislike for DAD took over for a second there :))

Let me also point out that DAF also features appearances from Q and Lois Maxwell's Moneypenny. Another couple of big plus points in DAF's favour. Although let's not forget that DAF also feature's a rather disastrous appearance from Sean's toupee ;)

Actually I find Q's appearance in DAF pretty uninspired. I enjoyed Cleese in DAD much more

I say DAD. It's more dimensional than DAF, in my opinion. I think Pierce gives a much better performance as James Bond, and I think the film takes twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat more than DAF.

But props to Lee Tamahori for giving a little "nod and a wink" to Guy Hamilton. One of many "nod and winks"...

    Wildly inconsistent vs. Consistently weird

At least D.A.D has moments of true greatness.

The sword fight is one of the single most embarrassing scenes in the whole series...anyone who has fenced just cringes as they watch it...you can see the actors 'waiting' for the other to catch up....truly appalling X-(

I'm a martial artist and my Son did fencing, and yeah, the choreography is lacking in spots, but I appreciate it being the ACTORS mostly doing it. I own Mark Of Zorro if I want perfection, but the fight in DAD was well paced, edited & scored. Like Lee's stuff on Green Hornet, it's exciting ANYWAY. :D

    Moonraker!

Ok, Ok, the space stations laser was never fired, but as far as I'm concerned it still counts.

Though the Icarus wins on destructive range, independent firepower, the Vanquish, and the Ice Palace is very impressive, and great effects. 5 points to DAD.

Amsterdam is a nice location, Wint & Kidd are funny henchman, Jill St John is lovely and funny "blow up your pants!" , Connery still has it as his Bond. 5 points to DAF.

Joint second place in my eyes.
This is Thunderbird 2, how can I be of assistance?

DAF Connery is no Connery. Pierce wins by a landslide in the Bond actor category for this matchup.

Really ? It's just stupid...all that rolling around and you can clearly see that they are too slow...the editing is terrible also...they ARE actors, so I would expect FAR better from them...its just an embarrassment all round...
