I liked the show when it first came out (its still good today ) I even went as far as saving up for a Triumph dolomite sprint
until I went to the university motors show room in Balham to test drive one ,only to find I couldn't fit in the bloody thing
but my fave car from the show was the Ford escort RS 2000 :)

    Loved the Professionals!

My neighbor drove a green Dolomite and refused to sell it to me because I'd kill myself with a brand new driver's license...

The sad thing for me was ( showing how hard up for money British tv is ) .
They pulled the third series of The New Avengers to pay for the Professionals.

Loved it! Back when the SAS would take the odd adventurer, or anybody non military who showed enough initiative to turn up the right time, and at the right place for selection! Lewis Collins tried out, and got a long way down the line. He started this to get the experience the producers thought he needed, but he carried on with intentions of joining. His earlier tv work made him too well known to carry on. He was a complete gun fanatic, and later owned many in LA, and was well respected at many gun clubs. We all know Lewis Collins met with Broccoli about being Bond, and the rest is history. Cubby hated him, thinking him too aggressive. Collins later said he just tried to play him with a tough edge. It's a shame though, that decent roles eluded him. He was a cool guy, our Steve McQueen really. Tough, edgy and cool. A mans man.

I think many of the plots of the Professionals stand up today. The work of the intelligence services was well known/researched by the writers.

I watched one the other day and thought the 3 litre Capri had almost gone full circle. You'd have laughed at a bloke in one in the nineties/noughties, but I think a well sorted one would get a few admirers now. Possibly by forty year old blokes, but I'm one and the thing with forty year old blokes is we couldn't give a rats arse what people think, and that's bloody brilliant.

How much of a fan was I? Well my four year old boy is called Lewis...

Obviously, THE PROFESSIONALS got Collins through Cubby's door, though I suspect Cubby saw him more out of duress due to Collins popularity in the UK at the time and being everything the geriatric Rog wasn't; regardless of Collins' attitude, I don't think he had a prayer with Cubby as Cubby was an old-school film producer who thought all leading men (ie James Bond) had to be 6 foot plus, which Collins obviously wasn't. Hell, Daniel Craig wouldn't even have got as far as Cubby's office.

That said, I think Collins leading turn in WHO DARES WINS probably confirmed he couldn't carry a Bond film.

And personally, its a shame he only ever got action roles of decreasing quality; I thought he had a really brilliant light comedic touch and elegant charm in THE CUCKOO WALTZ. Now THAT was a long time ago!

no offence taken, I know you was pulling my leg me old mate , just usual banter among a bunch of like minded blokes,
but as the thread said , there are repeats of the lads from C15 on some of the non BBC satations worth a look before forking out

I don't think Collins could have stomached the baffoonery territory the films were headed for. However, I would have enjoyed seeing him as Bond in the more serious entries.

I loved it but then again I love all that 60s spy stuff ( best tv theme, Ever ) :))
A couple of years ago bbc2 showed the full series again. It was remade in the 80s
    Not as good though..

Oh ! The one I was thinking of had Peter Graves, I think it was by an Australian tv company.
I think they also remade the Professionals, I'd forgotten about that. :))

Peter Graves Predecessor was better though, in my Opinion.

Hold on, are we talking about different things. I was on about the New Professionals. Awful and it was canned quickly. I didn't know they did a new MI series too, unless my mind has wiped it because it was that bad.
