ppk good or bad ?

I was wondering if any of the members who know about guns could explain, what
advancements have been made in guns since the ppk was made. As I know nothing
about guns, I was wondering are modern guns more accurate, more powerful, can
hold more rounds etc. In fact are modern handguns far better than the older versions ?
Or are most advances mainly cosmetic.
Thanks in advance for any answers, it just struck me today as had there been any big
Leaps in gun Tec over the years.

A few innovations have been made, but the biggest and most revolutionary one is the use of polymers. Making guns lighter and slimmer and able to hold slightly more rounds in a smaller sized butt compared to their steel framed cousins. Also the use of other alloys and harder corrosion resistant finishes.

Apart from that, there really haven't been that many advances in pistol technology. There have been more advances in ammunition than with the guns themselves. The PPK still holds up today as a really good and reliable little automatic (the German ones that is).

Thanks Asp9mm, another silly question. I accept all bullets can kill and have
read the Gardner books with Bond's special bullets but can a modern bullet do
more damage to a person than the WW2 stuff
( as my question shows I know nothing about guns ) )

My Knowledge of Firearms is not very good, but we can agree that a Bullet will put a rather nasty looking Hole in you )

It depends on a lot of things such as calibre, powder load and bullet shape. Most bullets back during WWII were just full metal copper jacketed. Now you have more research going into how the actual bullet performs upon impact and different designs and weights in bullets as well as the use of different metals.



Hollowpoints have been developed to have severe trauma impact. Remember that it's not just the bullet going into you that causes damage, but the devastating trauma that occurs to the surrounding tissue and organs as it passes through. This is much more likely to be lethal than the usual round headed FMJ bullet. Hollwpoints are banned by the Geneva convention for use during conflicts. But this is also very tactical as a FMJ is more likely to wound causing at least three soldiers to be out of action, the wounded man and the two helping him. Only one soldier is removed from action if a fatality occurs.

It's actually quite surprising how little has actually changed for handguns. We have changed some materials and the ammo, but the best handgun out there is a century old and trusted design (the 1911). The PPK is a really good conceal and carry gun but I wouldn't trade a 1911 for it since accuracy is severely affected beyond range. Though, the whole point of self defense handguns (or conceal and carry) is to defend against an attack... the majority of which happen in a 10 yard range and any gun is pretty much good if you simply point and shoot.

Seriously considering purchasing a PPK once I get my conceal and carry permit.

ASP9mm is right as usual. It's lightness that's the main thing. The PPK is still quite a substantial chunk even for a small pistol. But it's still a very accurate package. Modern weapons like Glocks don't fire or cycle the next round any faster than say, a 1935 designed Browning Hi-power. But they're substantially lighter. But the Browning still managed 13 rds which is higher than many makes today, or than is legal in many countries/states. Last time I shot in New Jersey and New York, ten was the legal limit for civilians so some advancements make no difference. Modern advancement in bullets and powders are certainly there, but mainly make a bigger difference in rifle calibres for hunting. It's been about ten years since I fired a PPK, but I remember feeling it was as good as anything else at the time.

I'll add that there are a few weapons that fire full auto (like Patrice's Glock in Skyfall) but people of varying ethics have been able to do this to semi auto pistols for a hundred years! And it's as pointless now as it was then. I used to have a faulty Browning that did it (I did get it repaired eventually!) but nobody that used it could accurately hit anything.

I was amazed one night watching a J Clarkson special on guns. Where he sprayed
A van with an AK47, it wasn't that far away. Yet no bullets hit it, he explained it was
A close range weapon. Now that suprised me. )
